Nonprofit crafts new way to enrich lives

Sometimes the talents and skills of people with disabilities are overlooked, but one new Gainesville nonprofit aims to change that with a business centered around their abilities.

Marty and Randy Owens, founders of Our Neighbor Inc., created another nonprofit called Randy and Friends Inc. earlier this year.

Randy and Friends Inc. has grown and has moved into a building at 869 Main St. in Gainesville. A grand opening celebration of The Rooster?s Perch will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon today.

Anyone who is interested in learning more about the organizations and what they offer is invited to attend.

The Rooster?s Perch is the a new business that will sell unique gifts and items handcrafted by the men and women involved with the nonprofits. Some of the items to be sold in the gift shop include yard art, jewelry and fishing lures. The store will also feature a coffee shop.

The nonprofits were formed with the intention to help people with physical limitations live more independent and satisfying lives.

Our Neighbor provides housing for independent living and jobs opportunities through its bookstore, The Next Chapter.

The Rooster?s Perch will provide additional job opportunities.

Marty Owens said the newest piece of the organization will focus more on social and career support for people with disabilities. Enrichment and creative classes will be held at the new business to help people learn new skills.

?We like to help people with disabilities live a satisfying life, and this is just one more way we can do it,? Owens said.
