Ex-Yankee Bobby Richardson shares his faith, book at N. Augusta church
The three-time World Series champion and 12-year member of the New York Yankees spoke at Grace United Methodist Church in North Augusta on Wednesday night, sharing stories of his time as a baseball player and introducing his newest book, Impact Player.
Richardson autographed copies of the book along with baseball memorabilia brought by the audience. He also answered questions.
Richardson, a native of Sumter, S.C., published Impact Player on Aug. 15 with the help of David Thomas.
It includes a foreword by Yankees manager Joe Girardi. Richardson said the support he received after his first book, The Bobby Richardson Story, which shared his testimony, helped push the second one to fruition.
?The letters I received were tremendous,? he said. ?People were entering the mission field, and decisions were being made.?
Richardson said the new book has enjoyed similar support.
?I went to New York and heard from Bible study groups in the Northeast, and I was appreciative of what I heard,? he said.
Richardson said he didn?t consider writing a book during his baseball career, but he expressed his love for God throughout his playing days, helping to bring others closer by using his influence as a professional athlete.
?The timing took care of itself,? he said. ?My life intertwined with baseball, and I was able to use the sport to reach out to others.?
As he thrived off the field, Richardson also found success on it, going to the World Series in seven of his 12 years as a Yankee between 1955 and 1966. He was a five-time Gold Glove winner and finished second to teammate Mickey Mantle for the American League?s MVP award in 1962. He also led South Carolina to a 221-92-1 record in six seasons as its head baseball coach.
