New arrests in Greece over fan's fatal stabbing

updated 8:52 a.m. ET Sept. 6, 2011

ATHENS, Greece - Greek police say they have arrested eight more people in connection with a clash between rival football fans on the island of Crete in which a 21-year-old man was fatally stabbed.

A police statement says two people are suspected of murder, including one of the youths taken into custody Tuesday. Another six people were arrested shortly after Monday's pre-dawn fight at the island's main town of Iraklio.

Police say the clash involved at least 30 fans of Cretan top division club OFI and Irodotos, a small local team.

The incident triggered new government pledges to crack down on rife football-related violence.
