Analysis: West struggles to understand Russia's Syria stance

LONDON (Reuters) - Western states trying to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad are increasingly struggling to deal with, or even understand, Russia's dogged support for him.

Arms deals, Russia's naval base in Tartus and fear of Islamist militancy in a post-Assad Syria are all held up as potential explanations. But Russian officials and some others say that misses the wider point.

They say Moscow's opposition to foreign-backed "regime change" reflects a fundamental disagreement with the West over sovereignty and the rights of states to deal with domestic instability by whatever means necessary.

"The Russian position can be explained by their hostility to any interference in the internal affairs of a country, especially in the current climate, because at home they have things to be worried about," says Denis Bauchard, a former diplomat and expert on the Middle East at the French Institute for International Relations (IFRI).

Time and time again, Western officials have confidently briefed that Russian President Vladimir Putin was on the brink of dumping his long-term ally, only to be disappointed.

On Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and counterparts from other major powers are due to meet in Geneva.

Once again, diplomats from several Western countries were predicting a shift. For the first time, they said, Russia had agreed with former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan's plan and its requirement for a gradual transition of power.

But late on Thursday, it emerged that Russia had put forward amendments that the United States, Britain and France said were unacceptable.

At a Group of 20 summit in Mexico this month, British Prime Minister David Cameron was embarrassed after suggesting that Putin had agreed Assad should go, only to have Putin himself dismiss the idea.

French President Francois Hollande talked at length about the importance of winning Russia over, but had an awkward press conference with Putin in May having clearly failed to do so.

AWKWARD MOMENTS

For every argument Hollande made before the assembled media, Putin had a counterargument. When Hollande asked if Russia would take Assad in exile, Putin replied that the Assad family had been invited to Paris much more often than to Moscow. While it is not clear that was true, Hollande still had to squirm.

Putin said the ousting of leaders did not necessarily lead to peace. He cited the case of Libya, where Moscow believes it was tricked by the West into supporting military intervention.

"Has it become safer there? Where are we moving? Is there an answer?" he asked.

Western states are still hoping that a series of military reverses for Assad will begin to tip the balance and force Putin to drop him. But it may not be that easy.

A death toll in Syria of well over 10,000 seems unlikely on its own to change Putin's mind. Estimates vary widely of the number of dead in Chechnya - a conflict in which he was involved as prime minister and president - but often exceed 100,000.

Rights activists and other witnesses say that conflict often involved artillery attacks on civilian areas, massacres and disappearances: potential war crimes now being reported in Syria.

Mindful of rising anti-Putin protests, not to mention separatist worries in the Caucasus, leaders in Moscow - and perhaps also Beijing, which has its own worries about unrest in Tibet, northwest China and many other areas - fear they might themselves have to adopt similar tactics again one day.

But it is the growing suggestion that Western democracies in particular might intervene militarily or otherwise to help such uprisings that really unnerves Russia's leaders, many believe. The 'Orange', 'Rose' and 'Tulip' revolutions in former Soviet Ukraine, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan have added to such concerns.

"Putin has spent the last decade obsessing about 'color revolutions'," says Stephen Sestanovich, principal State Department officer for the former Soviet Union between 1997 and 2001 and now senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.

"He hates the idea that the international community has anything to say about who holds power in a country whose leaders have done something awful. He tends to sympathize with those leaders."

COST OF REVOLUTION

It can also be argued that the price of a revolution such as Syria's is simply too high.

"Russia probably knows the true cost of revolutions better than most other countries," Lavrov wrote in the Huffington Post on June 15.

"We are fully aware that revolutionary changes are always accompanied by social and economic setbacks as well as by loss of human life and suffering. This is exactly why we support an evolutionary and peaceful way of enacting long-awaited changes in the Middle East and North Africa."

Russian officials say they are not wedded to Assad but want stability to return, and have so far not seen a strategy that would achieve this.

There is little doubt that the situation in Syria also feeds into wider Russian concerns.

Many Western diplomats suspect Russia fears that Syria after Assad could become a haven for Islamists, not least those fighting Russia in Chechnya.

While Russia's naval base at Tartus is regarded as little more than a refueling stop, it does give Russia a Mediterranean harbor that could prove valuable if trouble with Ukraine or Turkey obstructed the operations of its Black Sea Fleet.

In Alawite-run Syria, and perhaps to a lesser extent in Shi'ite Iran, Russia also has a regional counterweight to an increasingly vocal bloc of Sunni Muslim-led countries allied with Washington, primarily Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states.

Some also suspect that Russia may see frustrating Western interests and embarrassing its leaders as an end in itself as it looks to reassert itself as a global power - or at least as a useful short-term tactic until a clearer picture emerges.

"In the West we often exaggerate Putin's dictatorial side," says former U.S. official Sestanovich.

"In Russia, many criticize him for indecisiveness. It may be that in Syria he's actually confused about what to do, and is slowly concluding that Assad has had it. That's the hopeful interpretation: Putin the conflicted ditherer."

New way of probing exoplanet atmospheres

ScienceDaily (June 27, 2012) ? The planet Tau Bootis b [1] was one of the first exoplanets to be discovered back in 1996, and it is still one of the closest exoplanets known. Although its parent star is easily visible with the naked eye, the planet itself certainly is not, and up to now it could only be detected by its gravitational effects on the star. Tau Bootis b is a large "hot Jupiter" planet orbiting very close to its parent star.

Like most exoplanets, this planet does not transit the disc of its star (like the recent transit of Venus). Up to now such transits were essential to allow the study of hot Jupiter atmospheres: when a planet passes in front of its star it imprints the properties of the atmosphere onto the starlight. As no starlight shines through Tau Bootis b's atmosphere towards us, this means the planet's atmosphere could not be studied before.

But now, after 15 years of attempting to study the faint glow that is emitted from hot Jupiter exoplanets, astronomers have finally succeeded in reliably probing the structure of the atmosphere of Tau Bootis b and deducing its mass accurately for the first time. The team used the CRIRES [2] instrument on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile. They combined high quality infrared observations (at wavelengths around 2.3 microns) [3] with a clever new trick to tease out the weak signal of the planet from the much stronger one from the parent star [4].

Lead author of the study Matteo Brogi (Leiden Observatory, the Netherlands) explains: "Thanks to the high quality observations provided by the VLT and CRIRES we were able to study the spectrum of the system in much more detail than has been possible before. Only about 0.01% of the light we see comes from the planet, and the rest from the star, so this was not easy."

The majority of planets around other stars were discovered by their gravitational effects on their parent stars, which limits the information that can be gleaned about their mass: they only allow a lower limit to be calculated for a planet's mass [5]. The new technique pioneered here is much more powerful. Seeing the planet's light directly has allowed the astronomers to measure the angle of the planet's orbit and hence work out its mass precisely. By tracing the changes in the planet's motion as it orbits its star, the team has determined reliably for the first time that Tau Bootis b orbits its host star at an angle of 44 degrees and has a mass six times that of the planet Jupiter in our own Solar System.

"The new VLT observations solve the 15-year old problem of the mass of Tau Bootis b. And the new technique also means that we can now study the atmospheres of exoplanets that don't transit their stars, as well as measuring their masses accurately, which was impossible before," says Ignas Snellen (Leiden Observatory, the Netherlands), co-author of the paper. "This is a big step forward."

As well as detecting the glow of the atmosphere and measuring Tau Bootis b's mass, the team has probed its atmosphere and measured the amount of carbon monoxide present, as well as the temperature at different altitudes by means of a comparison between the observations and theoretical models. A surprising result from this work was that the new observations indicated an atmosphere with a temperature that falls higher up. This result is the exact opposite of the temperature inversion -- an increase in temperature with height -- found for other hot Jupiter exoplanets [6] [7].

The VLT observations show that high resolution spectroscopy from ground-based telescopes is a valuable tool for a detailed analysis of non-transiting exoplanets' atmospheres. The detection of different molecules in future will allow astronomers to learn more about the planet's atmospheric conditions. By making measurements along the planet's orbit, astronomers may even be able to track atmospheric changes between the planet's morning and evening.

"This study shows the enormous potential of current and future ground-based telescopes, such as the E-ELT. Maybe one day we may even find evidence for biological activity on Earth-like planets in this way," concludes Ignas Snellen.

If the planet's orbit is tilted relative to the line of sight between Earth and the star then a more massive planet causes the same observed back and forth motion of the star as a lighter planet in a less tilted orbit and it is not possible to separate the two effects.

[6] Thermal inversions are thought to be characterised by molecular features in emission in the spectrum, rather than in absorption, as interpreted from photometric observations of hot Jupiters with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The exoplanet HD209458b is the best-studied example of thermal inversions in the exoplanet atmospheres.

[7] This observation supports models in which strong ultraviolet emission associated to chromospheric activity -- similar to the one exhibited by the host star of Tau Bootis b -- is responsible for the inhibition of the thermal inversion.

Virgin America Crew to Octomom: LOL You Suck!

Nadya Suleman recently endured some turbulence in the non-literal sense on a Virgin America flight, enduring taunts and poor treatment from the crew.

According to Octomom herself, at least.

Her manager, Gina Rodriguez, says they were en route from LA to NYC on Tuesday to promote some Octomom porn when the airline made their lives hell.

Rodriguez says they were forced to change seats, never got any beverages, overheard the crew making jokes about/laughing at Octomom and more.

On top of general rudeness, she also says Octomom was kicked out of the bathroom by a flight attendant for no apparent reason ... because that happens.

Nadya filed a complaint with the airline, telling TMZ, "I was shocked at how poorly they treated me on the plane" and "will never fly Virgin America again."

Rodriguez adds that she and Nadya Suleman confronted the flight attendants about their behavior and one said in response, "I know who you guys are!"

That's as good an excuse as any.

As the world fights obesity at the human level, scientists at the University of Michigan and their colleagues have made a surprising finding at the microscopic level that could help fuel that fight.

Their work helps explain why fat-storing cells get fatter, and burn fat slower, as obesity sets in. If their findings from mice can be shown to apply to humans, they may provide a new target for obesity-fighting drugs.

By studying the tiny signals that fat-storing cells send to one another, the team has shown a crucial and previously unknown role for a molecule called Sfrp5.

The results, which appear online today and will be in the July issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, surprised them.

In a series of experiments, the team showed that Sfrp5 influences a signaling pathway known as WNT to stimulate fat cells ? called adipocytes ? to grow larger and to suppress the rate at which fat is burned in the mitochondria inside them.

By stopping cells from making Sfrp5, they were able to make mice that didn't get as fat as quickly because their adipocytes didn't grow large ? even when the mice were fed a high-fat diet. They even showed the impact when transplanting fat from Sfrp5?deficient mice into other mice.

The research was performed with National Institutes of Health funding in the U-M Medical School laboratory of Ormond MacDougald, Ph.D., the Faulkner Professor in the Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology, a professor of internal medicine and a member of U-M's Brehm Center for Diabetes Research.

Working with postdoctoral fellow and first author Hiroyuki Mori, Ph.D., and colleagues, MacDougald says the team built on its previous findings about the importance of WNT signaling in fat cell development.

"WNT signaling plays a crucial role in regulating, and inhibiting, white fat cell growth and the recruitment of new cells to store fat," he explains. "But it appears that in obesity, Sfrp5 can interfere with that signaling, and may create a feedback loop that keeps stimulating production of more of itself."

He notes that the new results contradict previous work published by another group, which found essentially the opposite role for Sfrp5. A commentary accompanying the new U-M paper, by scientists from Denmark, notes the strong evidence behind the new findings and emphasizes the importance of further research on the topic.

MacDougald and his team zeroed in on Sfrp5 after years of studying WNT signaling between adipocytes. They and other teams had already seen that the amounts of Sfrp5 produced within fat tissue were higher in obese animals.

They were able to breed mice that could not make the molecule, and expected to see that these mice resisted obesity because they couldn't convert more cells into adipocytes to store excess fat from their high-fat diet.

But instead, they found that the mice without Sfrp5 did have just as many fat cells as other mice -- but that these cells didn't accumulate fat and grow bigger. As a result, the mice didn't get fat, no matter how rich their diet.

Looking more closely at Sfrp5-deficient mice, they saw a surge of activity in expression of genes related to mitochondria ? the furnaces inside cells that burn fat or other fuel to power cell activity. It was as if the furnaces had been stoked when Sfrp5 wasn't present, so fat could be burned at a higher rate than normal.

"From our results, we believe that Sfrp5 is an important moderator of mitochondrial activity, the first time this has been seen for the WNT signaling pathway in adipocytes," says Mori. "This underscores the complexity of WNT signaling."

In essence, MacDougald says, Sfrp5 poses as a decoy receptor for WNT signals to bind to, keeping them from binding to the receptors on the cell surface that they otherwise would bind to. With WNT signaling reduced, cells store fat and grow larger, and don't burn it as quickly. Then, the cells produce even more Sfrp5, creating the feedback loop that perpetuates the tendency for adipocytes to accumulate lipid.

While pharmaceutical companies are already looking at WNT signaling as a possible target for drugs related to bone formation, the new findings suggest that perhaps the same signaling pathway could be a target for anti-obesity drugs.

But, MacDougald cautions, the findings need to be explored further in both mice and humans. With the obesity epidemic putting hundreds of millions of people at risk of all types of diseases, that research has a special urgency behind it.

The Google homepage today is adorned an interactive Turing Machine, a gadget often identified as a predecessor to the modern computer. The doodle honors Alan Turing, a British mathematician, cryptanalyst, and the inventor of the Turing Machine. But Turing, who would have turned 100 today, has another, even more important accolade to his name: He helped bring a close to World War II.?

In 1938, Turing, already an accomplished mathematician with a doctorate from Princeton, began working with the British Government Communications Headquarters, which was tasked with cracking the infamous Enigma machine. First pressed into use in 1919, the Enigma machine was used to decipher and transmit messages between German commands.?

Deciphering the Enigma code, the British correctly believed, would lend them a great advantage over the German war machine, which was then lurching into gear. As David Leavitt of the Washington Post notes, "because the [Engima] code was generated by a machine, Turing decided, only a machine could break it." Together with a group of the best scientists in England ? chief among them Gordon Welchman ??he set about building it.?

The first "bombe," as the code-cracking machines were known, received the name of "Victory" ? the next was dubbed "Aggie," short for Agnus Dei. The machines were installed in?Bletchley Park, an estate in?Buckinghamshire, England, and quickly put to work. By November of 1942, during the height of the war, there were reportedly 49 bombes in use, all of them dedicated to deciphering German code.?

All the information, meanwhile, was collected under the codename Ultra.?The project was a wild success: With the help of the machines made by Turing and Welchman, the Allies were finally one step ahead of the Germans ? they could track Nazi troop movements and potential U-Boat attacks.?

"It was thanks to Ultra that we won the war," British Prime Minister Winston Churchill told King George VI, according to MSNBC.?

Getting something for nothing is great, but getting a lot for hardly anything is also pretty darn good. LastPass 2.0 Premium ($12 per year) costs less than a martini at a Manhattan bar. It offers all the amazing password management features of the free version of LastPass plus impressive additions to mobile security and multifactor authentication.

Do read my review of LastPass 2.0 (free, 5 stars) for full details on this program's amazing capabilities. It does virtually everything that any of its competitors can do, and then goes further, much further. I'll summarize here, briefly.

Naturally LastPass handles capturing and playing back website login credentials. It's also very good at detecting password changes and new secure site signups. Its user interaction is very unobtrusive, and it successfully captures credentials from oddball login pages that throw the competition for a loop.

LastPass can store one or more profiles of personal information and one or more credit cards. When you go to fill a Web form you can mix and match, choosing whichever profile and whichever credit card you like. The identities feature lets you filter which passwords and profiles are visible, so, for example, you can enable a subset of your data at work.

Your encrypted data is stored online, so you can access it from any connected computer. In addition to passwords and personal data, LastPass will store secure notes. These can be formatted for specific data types such as driver's licenses and passports, and now can include attachments. Users of the free edition can store 50MB of files; upgrading to premium raises that to 1GB.

The free edition includes several varieties of multifactor authentication, to secure your LastPass data more strongly than even a strong password can. It also includes free credit monitoring.

Full Functionality with No Plug-in
It's true that you can log into your LastPass Vault from any connected computer, but if you don't have the LastPass plugin installed it can't automatically fill your saved logins or capture new ones. The free edition offers bookmarklets for this situatoin, tiny JavaScript programs contained in a URL, but some may find using them a bit awkward.

Enter IEAnywhere, a premium-only feature that lets you use LastPass without installing a plugin. Once you download and run the program you'll find a LastPass icon in the system tray. Click it to log in. You now have a full LastPass menu, including your tree of saved logins, that's rooted at the system tray instead of in a browser button.

IEAnywhere also puts a tiny icon in one corner of the Internet Explorer window. From this icon's menu you can choose to fill in passwords or Web forms, generate secure passwords, and more. It's a nice solution for occasions when you want to use LastPass but don't have the permissions needed to actually install the plug-in.

What if an asteroid were on a collision course with Earth and only 21 days remained before the end of days? What would you do? Reunite with family and spend your final hours letting everyone you care about know how much you love them? Or gorge on all your favorite foods, sleep with anybody who would have you, and try illicit drugs like heroin, because why the hell not?

Seeking a Friend For the End of the World is about an insurance agent named Dodge (Steve Carell) who long ago surrendered himself to the comfort and security afforded by the monotony of an ordinary existence. He?s not equipped to face exciting new opportunities, let alone the apocalypse. So he keeps driving in to work, even as his office is emptier each day.

Writer-director Lorene Scafaria mines some solid comedy from this material. Hers is not a realistic portrayal of the end times. With only 21 days left for mankind, Dodge?s company announces that employees should feel free to wear ?casual Friday? clothes any day of the week. Dodge?s cleaning lady keeps coming to his apartment; when he tells her it?s no longer necessary, she thinks she?s being fired. These moments are exaggerated for comic effect, to be sure, but there?s a kernel of truth there. Faced with tragedy, some of us cling even tighter to our routines.

Others, like Dodge?s friends Warren (Rob Corddry) and Diane (Connie Britton) feel like it?s time to party. They throw a ?last supper? that involves plentiful sexual opportunities, rampant drug use, and guests playing with fire. Dodge attends but doesn?t participate in the debauchery. Instead, since there is no future, he turns to his past. He rummages through a box full of mementos of Olivia, his high school sweetheart, the ?one that got away.?

But suddenly Penny (Keira Knightley) enters his life. She?s younger, vivacious, and?more optimistic than he is. She encourages him to track down Olivia before they?re out of time, and he says he knows someone with a plane who can get her home to England to see her parents (by this point all commercial airlines have shut down.) Seeking a Friend then morphs into a road trip movie, and later a surprisingly ardent romance.

The comic scenes are broad, playing like full-on farce ? as when Penny and Dodge stop to eat at a roadside steakhouse where the entire staff is high on ecstasy. Meanwhile the romantic scenes, as the couple?s relationship develops, have a surprisingly sincere and serious-minded tone. These two aspects of the film don?t entirely mesh together ? they even undermine each other ? which left me unconvinced and unmoved by the romance.

This becomes a bit of a problem because at the end of the day, of course, it?s all about love.
