Fort Valley's Mayor Stumbo Apologizes After DUI Arrest

Fort Valley's mayor is apologizing to his city and his family after being arrested last month in Monroe County and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Monroe County Sheriff John Cary Bittick says John Stumbo was arrested in Monroe County around 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29, and charged with having an open container and driving under the influence of alcohol.

In a statement released Wednesday, Stumbo wrote, in part, 'I accept full responsiblity for the terrible decision I made to consume alcohol and then drive. I am sorry for the embarrassment I have brought upon my family and the city that I love...."

Bittick says Stumbo was released that night on a $1,900 property bond.

The sheriff says Stumbo was found parked in the emergency lane on Interstate 75, near the entrance to the weigh station just north of Forsyth.

He told the deputy on the scene he was mayor of Fort Valley, the sheriff said.

Bittick said Stumbo's blood-alcohol level was .087. That's seven-hundredths of a point over Georgia's legal limit, .08.

The sheriff also said Stumbo took multiple field-sobriety tests.

Stumbo has been mayor of Fort Valley for 14 years. Two years ago he was elected to a fourth term.

Stumbo's office staff said he was not available this morning and his parking space outside Fort Valley City Hall was empty.
