NASA: Space station may be evacuated by late Nov.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? Astronauts may need to temporarily abandon the International Space Station this fall if last week's Russian launch accident prevents new crews from flying, a NASA official said Monday.

If Russia's essential Soyuz rockets remain grounded beyond mid-November, there will be no way to launch any more astronauts before the current residents are supposed to leave, said NASA's space station program manager, Mike Suffredini.

A space station supply ship was destroyed last week following liftoff from Kazakhstan. The failed upper stage of the Soyuz rocket is similar to what's used to launch astronauts.

The launch of the very next crew already has been delayed. It had been scheduled for Sept. 22.

To keep the orbiting outpost with a full staff of six for as long as possible, three of the current residents will remain in orbit for at least an extra week. They were supposed to return to Earth on Sept. 8.

Suffredini said flight controllers could keep a deserted space station operating indefinitely, as long as all major systems are working properly.

But that's always the last resort: The risk to the space station goes up if no one's on board to fix potential equipment breakdowns.

"We have plenty of options," Suffredini said. "We'll focus on crew safety as we always do."

Astronauts have been living continuously aboard the space station ever since the first crew was launched in 2000.

NASA considered vacating the space station following the space shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003. Back then, shuttles were still being used to ferry some station residents back and forth. Instead, the station got by with two-man crews for a few years because of the significant cutback in supplies.

Even if the space shuttles still were flying ? the program ended last month ? space station crews still would need Soyuz-launched capsules to serve as lifeboats, Suffredini said. The capsules are certified for no more than 6? months in space, thus the need to regularly rotate crews.

As for supplies, the space station is well stocked and could go until next summer, Suffredini said. Space shuttle Atlantis dropped off a year's supply of goods just last month.

For now, operations are normal aboard the 240-mile-high complex, he noted, and the additional week on board for half the crew will mean additional science research.

The Russians have set up an investigation team and until it comes up with a cause for the accident and a repair plan, the launch and landing schedules remain in question. None of the spacecraft debris has been recovered yet; the wreckage fell into a remote, wooded section of Siberia.

Suffredini said he hasn't had time to consider the PR impact of abandoning the space station, especially coming so soon after the end of the 30-year shuttle program.

"Flying safely is much, much more important than anything else I can think about right this instant," he said. "I'm sure we'll have an opportunity to discuss any political implications if we spend a lot of time on the ground. But you know, we'll just have to deal with them because we're going to do what's safest for the crew and for the space station."

There is also another factor to consider ? accessibility. There should likely be a lake, river, or ocean near one to use. Also, tow capacity should be considered to tow the boat. Yet another reality show about an unusual job. Well, selling used cars doesn't seem that unusual to us, but the new Discovery show "Carfellas" focuses on reformed ex-con Mike DeLucia and his pals. Kind of looks like what would happen if some minor pals of "The Sopranos" started a dealership. (Premieres Aug. 29, 10 p.m., Discovery.)

Filmmaker Janus Metz and cameraman Lars Skree spent months embedded with a platoon of Danish soldiers in Afghanistan, even putting cameras on the soldiers' helmets. The resulting film, "Armadillo," won high honors and has been critically acclaimed. While the soldiers could turn their cameras off if they chose, they often didn't, meaning that a controversial event involving Taliban fighters is captured for all to see. (Aug. 30 on PBS's "POV," check local listings for times.)

No big movie releases this week, but some critics loved "Skateland," which focuses on a roller-rink manager and his pals in early-'80s small-town Texas. If Blondie, Foreigner, Jordache jeans and El Caminos send you back in time, get a hold of your old-school buddies and check it out. (Out on DVD Aug. 30.)

2 security alerts in UK historic city (AP)

LONDON ? British army bomb disposal experts were called into the historic cathedral city of Canterbury on Friday night to help investigate two incidents, including a fake bomb found on a railway line during rush hour, officials said.

The discovery of the suspicious device was followed by a fire inside a baby changing area at a Marks and Spencer department store, authorities said.

Assistant Chief Police Constable Andy Adams announced Friday night that the "suspicious package on the railway line has been checked by Army bomb disposal experts and is not -- as has been reported -- an explosive device. We are satisfied it is in fact a hoax package designed to appear like a device."

Transport police said all trains in the area were stopped until the emergency passed.

The fire at the department store, which was quickly extinguished, was discovered at 5:10 p.m. (1610 GMT) in a baby changing area on the second floor, police said. Marks and Spencer ? a fixture in Britain's city centers and suburban malls ? was evacuated without injuries.

Adams said the fire was "suspicious but it doesn't represent a threat."

No injuries were reported in the incidents, deemed "serious" by police and which caused major traffic jams and road closures. Police urged residents and visitors to avoid the city center, which is a popular tourist destination about 60 miles (95 kilometers) east of London in the county of Kent.

Greenwich, Conn., officials ask ABC show to leave

GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) ? Officials in one well-to-do Connecticut town are asking an ABC hidden-camera show to hit the road.

Greenwich officials tell the Greenwich Time (http://bit.ly/qUQu3J ) that the filming of the show "What Would You Do?" is disruptive. They say they asked the film crew to choose another location for filming.

The show sets up morally difficult situations and secretly films people's reactions.

Town officials say having the show set up in front of stores has a negative impact on business. Greenwich police say one of the show's scenes caused an alarmed resident to ask a store employee to call police.

The Associated Press left messages for an ABC representative.
