This week marks the beginning of the annual lianghui, or ?two meetings? in Beijing: the National People?s Congress and the Chinese People?s Political Consultative Conference. In terms of China?s politics, these are the biggest legislative meetings of the year. At the end of the meetings, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang will be formally appointed the president and premier of China, ending the era of Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao, although the real power transfer occurred last November during the 18th Party Congress.
Although China?s state-run media is devoting wall-to-wall coverage to the two meetings, ordinary Chinese people don?t seem all that engaged. Why aren?t they interested? Will the meetings find solutions to some of China?s most pressing problems, like environmental pollution? And what mistake do most Western media make when they look at China?s new leaders?
