9 killed, more than 2 dozen hurt when charter tour bus veers off icy highway in eastern Oregon

PENDLETON, Ore. - RCMP in British Columbia were asked Sunday to help notify the relatives of people on a Vancouver-bound tour bus that crashed in Oregon Sunday morning, killing nine people.

Police were asked to notify relatives in the Vancouver-area, said RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen.

"Oregon state police has requested our assistance in regards to that tragic crash in their jurisdiction and requested that we assist in some of the next of kin notifications that may need to be done here in the Lower Mainland or even outside the Lower Mainland," said Thiessen in an interview.

"So as we do them, those notifications, we will be supporting those families that are affected and will be providing information back to the Oregon State Police in regards to those next of kin notifications."

Thiessen declined to answer questions about the nationalities of the victims.

Police say the tour bus was owned by a Vancouver company called Mi Joo Tour & Travel and had been headed to Vancouver from Las Vegas with 40 people on board.

It lost control around 10:30 a.m. on snow- and ice-covered lanes of Interstate 84 in eastern Oregon. Oregon State Police said it crashed through a guardrail and plunged about 30 metres down a steep embankment.

The bus landed upright at the bottom of the snowy slope, with little or no debris visible around the crash site.

More than a dozen rescue workers descended the hill and used ropes to help retrieve people from the wreckage in freezing weather. The bus driver was among the survivors, but had not yet spoken to police because of the severity of the injuries the driver had suffered.

St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton treated 26 people from the accident, said hospital spokesman Larry Blanc. Five of those treated at St. Anthony were transported to other facilities.

Blanc did not elaborate on the nature of the injuries but told the Oregonian that the hospital brought in additional staff to handle the rush of patients and did a lot of X-ray imaging.

Lt. Greg Hastings said the bus crashed along the west end of the Blue Mountains, and west of an area called Deadman Pass. The area is so dangerous the state transportation department published specific warnings for truck drivers, advising it had "some of the most changeable and severe weather conditions in the Northwest" and can lead to slick conditions and poor visibility.

The East Oregonian said it spoke with two South Korean passengers, ages 16 and 17. Both said through a translator that they were seated near the rear of the bus when it swerved a few times, hit the guardrail and flipped. They described breaking glass and seeing passengers pinned by their seats as the bus slid down the hill. Both said that they feared for their lives.

The paper said that the teens, one of whom injured a knee and the other suffered a broken collarbone, were staying at a hotel arranged by the Red Cross.

I-84 is a major east-west highway through Oregon that follows the Columbia River Gorge.

A bus safety website run by the U.S. Department of Transportation said Mi Joo Tour & Travel has six buses, none of which have been involved in any accidents in at least the past two years.

The bus crash was the second fatal accident on the same highway in Oregon on Sunday. A 69-year-old man died in a rollover accident about 30 miles west of the area where the bus crashed.

A spokesman for the American Bus Association said buses carry more than 700 million passengers a year in the United States.

"The industry as a whole is a very safe industry," said Dan Ronan of the Washington, D.C.,-based group. "There are only a handful of accidents every year. Comparatively speaking, we're the safest form of surface transportation."

The bus crash comes more than two months after another chartered tour bus in October veered off a highway in northern Arizona, killing the driver and injuring dozens of passengers who were mostly tourists from Asia and Europe. Authorities say the driver likely had a medical episode.

Ag secretary sees common ground on gun control

(AP) ? Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the Newtown school shootings have changed the gun control debate and that rural America is ready to be part of a national conversation that he believes could bring people together.

Vilsack says the debate has to start with respect for the Second Amendment right to bear arms and a recognition that hunting is a way of life for millions of Americans.

But Vilsack said that the nation has reached "a different circumstance" in the gun control debate. It will take time, but it's now "potentially a unifying conversation," he said. President Barack Obama recognizes that changes to gun laws can't just be decreed from Washington but must come from the "grassroots up."

Vilsack was interviewed Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

Going Off the Fiscal Cliff Could Mean Missing the Next Hurricane Sandy

If they are so essential, why is there ALREADY a planned one year satellite gap?

You're operating under the flawed assumption that congress has the public's best interest in mind. There was no PLANNED one year satellite gap, you fucking fool.

Congressional budget cutting will delay the launch of a key weather satellite and hinder tracking of killer hurricanes, tornadoes and other severe weather, officials warn.

The satellite, which had been scheduled to launch in 2016, will be postponed 18 months because of spending cuts and delays. The threat during that gap is that National Weather Service forecasts will become fuzzier, with the paths of hurricanes and tornadoes even less predictable.

With more budget cuts looming, further delays are possible ? something President Obama alluded to last week....

"There will be a data gap. That data gap will have very serious consequences to our ability to do severe storm warnings, long-term weather forecasts, search and rescue and good weather forecasts," Jane Lubchenco, NOAA administrator, told members of a Senate Appropriations subcommittee in April....

Forecasters issued warnings five days ahead of tornadoes that struck Tuscaloosa, Ala., and five other states in April. A barrage of 312 tornadoes swept across the Southeast, killing 321 people. On storm day, forecasters gave warnings averaging 27 minutes before actual touchdowns.

Likewise, when a tornado struck Joplin, Mo., killing 151 on May 22, forecasters gave warnings averaging 24 minutes before strikes.

"The satellites are an important part of that early warning process," said Christopher Vaccaro, a spokesman for the service....

Lubchenco said without information from the polar satellite, forecasts for a massive storm nicknamed "snowmageddon," which hit Washington in February 2010, would have had the location wrong by 200 to 300 miles and would have underestimated the snowfall by 10 inches. Hurricane tracking would also suffer, she said.

"Our severe storm warnings will be seriously degraded," Lubchenco testified April 1 before the House Appropriations subcommittee governing the agency.

Lawmakers and scientists lauded the value of the program, which provides forecasts for military troop deployments, ocean search-and-rescue missions and farmers tending crops.

"It's important for public safety," said Christine McEntee, executive director of the American Geophysical Union. Cutting the funding "would be penny-wise and pound-foolish."

Lubchenco credited the satellites with helping save 295 people in 2010 by helping track rescue beacons aboard ships.

"That's saving lives, that's saving money," said Rep. Chaka Fattah of Pennsylvania, the top Democrat on the House panel that oversees NOAA funding.

But reduced federal spending threatens all domestic programs. Congress cut spending $38.5 billion in the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30. House Republicans propose to cut another $30 billion next year.

So, there was never a planned gap. The damn funding got cut, and now it's getting cut some more. What's the point of having scientists advise on these issues if they get ignored? Fuck them, and fuck you. Can't prioritize anything or even look at the data and reason for yourselves. Go sleep in a tar-pit, you dickheads are hindering the herd.

Bill & Melinda Gates Uphold Household Ban on Apple Products Despite the Death of Zune

Jennifer Gates With an iPhone

Zune is Dead, but Melinda Gates confirms the no Apple policy is still alive and well.?

Back in June of 2011, Bill Gates conducted an interesting interview with the UK?s Daily Mail, and revealed a much more personal side of the ex-Microsoft CEO then we were used to. He opened up about his family life, an amusingly enough, he even admitted what he tells his kids when they ask Santa for an iPad. At the time Bill was adamant they were a Zune only family, but fast forward to New Year?s Eve 2012, and Zune is all but completely dead. So has this loosened up the no iDevice policy?

In a recent interview on Radio 4 in the UK, Melinda Gates reaffirms the ban is still in place. When asked if Bill Gate?s two daughters and one lone son still ask for Apple products, she replied without hesitation. Of course they do, she said. "But they get Windows technology," she added. "The wealth from our family came from Microsoft so why would we invest in a competitor?"?

Melinda Gates also openly admits lusting after the iPhone prior to the launch of Windows Phone 7, calling the handset rather tasty. "Every now and then I look at my friends and say 'Ooh, I wouldn't mind having that iPhone?," she said.

Despite the ban, Melinda Gates also confirms Bill?s statement that the house of Jobs and Gates was at complete peace leading up to Steve?s death. It would appear the household policy is more about public perception than malice towards a competitor.

Rumor has it Jennifer Gates found a way to sneak an iPhone into the house?at some point last year based on the picture above, but we assume it has since been confiscated based on this interview.

Snore Less And Sleep Better With These Tips - Health Care

Everybody needs about 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night in order to be alert for the day ahead and to be healthy. This sleep has to be restful, though, or it won?t do you any good. This can be difficult to get if you or someone you sleep with snores. This article will provide some methods that you can try to deal with that dilemma.

Nasal strips can help limit snoring. These nasal strips appear very much like a Band-Aid. However, they function much differently than a Band-Aid. Nasal strips are specially designed to hold the nasal passages open. You will be better able to breath with your nose and it can greatly decrease your snoring.

If you want to minimize snoring, make sure you get adequate sleep. However, just increasing the number of hours that you sleep is not enough; you also have to sleep on a regular schedule daily. You should strive to go to sleep at night and get up in the morning at the same time, respectively, every day.

People who suffer from allergies should avoid using antihistamines before bed, because they may increase your snoring. Antihistamines cause drowsiness and could relax the air passage ways in your throat, resulting in a higher chance that you?ll snore when you sleep. If it is necessary to take these types of drugs, take them several hours before bedtime.

If you are active and exercise regularly, this will help you stop snoring. Snoring at night can be stopped with regular exercise. Exercise makes your breathing more regular and this can stop snoring. Exercise reduces your stress, as well as helps your lungs stay healthy. Lots of stress can affect your breathing issues and can increase the chance that you?ll snore.

What you consume can contribute to your snoring. If you regularly consume sedatives or alcohol, limit your intake. Alcohol and sedatives can decrease your central nervous system. This will cause your body to become overly relaxed and the muscles of your throat will not have the ability to function properly.

Snoring could be stress or psychologically-induced, so try getting into yoga or using some breathing techniques. By fixing your snoring problem, you will find yourself getting more sleep, which in the end will make you more relaxed and will also help your stress levels.

Snoring is sometimes a sign that other things may be going on in your body. Snoring deprives your brain of oxygen, which can lead to high blood pressure. This damages your carotid arteries and adds to plaque formation in these important arteries which supply blood to the brain. This can sometimes lead to a stroke. While this may not be the rule, it?s one reason to look into snoring cures.

If you keep your mouth open while you?re asleep, you will snore more. When you breathe through your mouth, air vibrates and echoes as it travels down your throat. However, if you breathe through your nose, air can travel through your body without going down your throat. It is possible to avoid breathing through your mouth by utilizing chin straps or mouth sealants to keep your mouth from opening while you sleep. Most pharmacies carry such devices, so simply ask your pharmacist for a recommendation.

It can seem hard to control snoring. However, that is a false assumption. You?ll find there are many techniques to try which can help to relieve you from snoring. The article above is a good starting point for ending snoring and sleeping well.

Argentina?s YPF and Bridas, 50% owned by CNOOC, to invest $1.5B in Vaca Muerta shale oil development in Argentina

Argentina state-owned energy company YPF and Bridas, an Argentina-based oil and gas company 50% owned by China National Offshore Oil Corporation, agreed to invest $1.5 billion over the next 24 months to begin development in the massive shale oil deposits in the Vaca Muerta (?Dead Cow?) formation in the province of Neuqu?n?one of the largest shale oil formations in the world.

Vaca Muerta is present in an area of 30,000 km2 (7.4 million acres); of this area, YPF participates in 12,000 km22 (3.0 million acres, or 40% of the total. The estimated size of recoverable shale oil in the formation has increased to about which has increased to 741 million barrels, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The area of the deal encompasses 663 square kilometers; the $1.5 billion investment includes the acquisition by Bridas of 35% of Down Area A?elo and 24.5% of Bandurria. The development plan calls for 130 wells to be drilled over the next two years.

While most of the development is targeting unconventional oil will, a portion will be for wet gas exploitation.

As part of the agreement, Bridas is also seeking $500 million in additional long-term funding.

As with an agreement signed earlier in December between YPF and Chevron, the deal is a ?farm-in?, which brings YPF title over the area, while both companies share exploration and development costs, as well as know-how and technology.

Making new residents feel at home

Recently, the Ranch Ehrlo Society implemented a new intake process for all new residents who come to stay at the agency.

Rationale

?The purpose of the new intake process is to help young people coming to live at the Ranch transition as smoothly as possible,? commented Linda Meyer, vice-president of clinical services. ?Coming to the Ranch might be a bit scary so we just want to let residents know what they might expect. Our goal is to ensure all new residents feel safe and warmly welcomed.?

Some of the major changes and additions to the new intake process are listed below:

Pre-Intake Letter

A pre-intake letter was developed that will be sent to the referral agency. ?Included with this letter is the Welcome to the Ranch orientation video and the Ranch Ehrlo resident handbook, so that this information can be reviewed with the youth and family prior to the admission meeting. Reviewing this information prior to the admission meeting helps answer questions that the new residents and their parents/guardians may have about Ranch Ehrlo?s programs and services. The intent is to help make the admission meeting a positive experience. The youth and family are also encouraged to visit our web site, which also has information about our programs and services as well as a virtual tour of the Pilot Butte campus.

Resident handbook

The resident handbook was updated, complete with information about the agency and its programs, the treatment process, guidelines for resident behaviour and family involvement, an outline of the agency?s and resident?s responsibilities, and new images to give new residents a sense of the agency.

Intake Package

The Intake Package was reduced in size:

- Some forms were removed entirely and other forms were combined

-?The full policies that were previously included for review with the resident and family were removed from the package, with the information within the resident handbook (which contains an abridged version of those full polices) being used in place of the full policy version

-??The resident handbook is now to be reviewed within a seven-day period of admission, giving the resident time to settling into the program before sitting down with a worker to review this information

-??The Welcome to the Ranch Orientation Video was developed, in part, for use within the intake meeting, giving the resident and families important information in a fun and non-threatening format

Welcome to the Ranch orientation video

Ranch Ehrlo has also just released a brand new orientation video for new residents. The video features former Ranch youth as actors and the narrator. The five minute video highlights treatment services available at Ranch Ehrlo, our unique schools, recreational activities, family involvement, and home life in the residential units. The original video was shot in English and translated to Cree, Dene, and Inuktitut.

Virtual Tour

A virtual tour of all aspects of our Pilot Butte campus is anticipated to launch next week on our main website.

Fidget Baskets

Fidget baskets were assembled to use during intake meeting. Items include: fidgets, little toys to play with, silly putty, play dough, crayons, and paper.

Welcome package

An intake welcome package was also introduced. This package contains a sports bag, pillow, blanket, hygiene bag, hygiene items, paper, a pen, envelopes, a journal, a photo album, and an informational card supplied by the Advocate for Children and Youth. In addition to all new residents being provided with a welcome package, all current residents were also provided one.

Credit Where Credit is Due

A very special thanks needs to go to Jane Powell Showchuk, director of special projects who took the lead on the redesign of the intake and admission process.? Jane developed a working committee in partnership with Karrie Derbyshire, director of programs.? Together Jane and Karrie worked with the clinical team, who were instrumental in coming up with many of these ideas during a brainstorming session at one of their clinical team meetings held last year.?

Many other employees contributed significantly to the project. This includes credit for the orientation video concept going to Julie Francella; credit for the creative video script and overall video development and management going to Trudy Bosch; credit to Nick Crighton for helping locate translators for the Cree, Dene, and Inuktuk versions of the orientation video; credit for organizing the purchase and distribution of the welcome packages going to Justin Waldrop; and a special thanks to Cheryl Gosselin, Michele Foraie, and Monica Gohm for assembling the new intake packages.? The clinical team, program directors, and unit managers all worked to review and provide feedback to help ensure the process would meet the original goals.

Finally, it is important to note that the late Dr. Geoff Pawson, Ranch Ehrlo Society?s founder and past CEO, inspired this entire project about a year and a half ago, as he wanted to ensure that our intake process was as warm and welcoming as possible and completely aligned with our philosophy.

Americans blame Republicans more than Democrats for "fiscal cliff": Reuters/Ipsos poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Americans blame Republicans in Congress more than congressional Democrats or President Barack Obama for the current "fiscal cliff" crisis, as the deadline approaches for action to avert big tax increases and spending cuts, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Thursday.

When asked who they believed to be more responsible for the "fiscal cliff" situation, 27 percent blamed Republicans in Congress, 16 percent blamed Obama and 6 percent pointed to Democrats in Congress. The largest percentage - 31 percent - blamed "all of the above."

A similar breakdown was found in response to questions about the economy. Asked who was responsible for the national unemployment rate, the poll found 23 percent chose Republicans in Congress, 16 percent said Obama and 7 percent said Democrats in Congress, while 32 percent picked "all of the above."

The U.S. unemployment rate stood at 7.7 percent in November, according to Labor Department figures.

"Fiscal cliff" refers to the tax increases on nearly all Americans and the deep, automatic government spending cuts due to begin in January - possibly pushing the United States back into recession - if lawmakers do not take action.

Sixty-seven percent of Americans polled in the online survey said the impending "fiscal cliff" was not affecting their holiday spending.

The survey of 1,477 Americans, interviewed online, was conducted December 23-27. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

Childhood Obesity Rates Declining in the US According to New Study

A national study? conducted by the Centers for Disease? Control and Prevention has found that obesity is declining among 2 to 4 year olds from low income families. If this trend continues then parents and health advocates like myself are doing the right thing and childhood obesity has finally passed its peak.

Researchers used height and weight measurements taken from 27 million children who were participating in the federal Women, Infants and Children program (WIC) from 1998 to 2010.? The obesity rates among those children declined to 14.9 percent in 2010.

According to the report a 3-year-old-boy of average height (about 3 feet), is obese if he weighs 37 pounds or more and and extremely obese if he weighs 44 pounds or more.

?The declines we?re presenting here are pretty modest, but it is a change in direction,? said Heidi M. Blanck, one of the study?s authors and the acting director of the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity at the disease centers. ?We were going up before. And this data shows we?re going down. For us, that?s pretty exciting.?

There are several different theories as to why childhood obesity is on the decline. Breast feeding has increased since 2000.? Breast milk is the best nutrition for infants 12 months and under and is proven to help children obtain a healthier weight. The Federal Trade Commission found that companies are spending less money on food marketing to children, which may also have a positive impact on childhood obesity rates. Data from 48 major food and beverage marketers also found that cereals marketed to children ages 2 to 11 had about a gram less sugar per serving in 2009 than in 2006 and slightly more whole grain. The WIC program also made significant changes and is providing more funding for fresh produce and less for sugary juice beverages.?

I am hopeful that we are winning this fight against childhood obesity in the United States.? Federal programs like, Let's Move and WIC are doing an excellent job educating families on the importance of feeding their children healthy and nutritious foods.? The food and beverage industry is offering healthier products with less sugar.? Educational materials including books, websites, social media, and PSA are more readily available to families of all income levels.? Our society needs to make these changes permanent. The future of our children depends on it.

semiofficial verina: High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) | Fitness ...

High blood pressure, the pressure in the vessels is increased. This increases the risk for stroke, vascular disease and other serious heart condition

Classic blood pressure: pressure cuff on the upper arm, listening to the sound when you release the pressure (Sphygmanometrie and auscultation)

Survey

Normal blood pressure is below 140/90 mmHg. High blood pressure (or hypertension also called arterial hypertension), these measurements are repeated or consistently exceeded.

High blood pressure occurs mainly as primary hypertension, ie high blood pressure ?in itself.? This means that it is not caused by other diseases. Only about ten to fifteen percent of people with specific diseases, such as kidney, adrenal or thyroid glands are the cause (secondary hypertension). With the treatment of these diseases is often regulated, the increased blood pressure.

However, the problem is that high blood pressure often initially makes no complaints. He usually remains undetected once. The health consequences are long term, however severe. Constantly high pressure strain on the heart. It also constricts the blood vessels, accelerating atherosclerosis (arteriosclerosis) and deteriorated to the circulation.

Therefore, high blood pressure is a leading risk factor for stroke and the next Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) and dyslipidemia a major cause of heart disease such as heart attack and heart failure. The risk of disability and death is high blood pressure increased significantly with these complications.

Also, kidney and eye disease are often based on high blood pressure. As a result, it can lead to kidney failure, and vision impairment, worst come to blindness.

Symptoms:

Over time usually occur initially only general symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, palpitations or stumble, nervousness and insomnia. Other symptoms depend on the possible vascular and organ damage. Sudden blurred vision, double vision can also, for example, be a warning sign of a stroke: Immediately go to the doctor!

Diagnosis:

?

epeated pressure measurements can confirm the diagrnosis. In addition, the heart, the metabolism, the kidneys, the eyes may also be checked. Rarely even further investigations are necessary.

?

?

Therapy:

Numerous effective and safe drugs can lower high blood pressure. New is a catheter treatment, deserted in the renal nerves by supplying radio frequency power are (initially only in intractable hypertension, the method is not yet widely implemented). ?Universal medicine? is a healthy lifestyle. It depends mainly on two points: a balanced, not the metabolism onerous, as a low-salt diet and regular exercise. Low stress, moderate alcohol consumption and not smoking do the rest. If you are overweight, you should lose weight permanently. All this helps to keep the blood pressure in the ?Grunen area? ? a good prerequisite to remain cardiovascular fit.

Following our expert Professor Dr. Wolfram Delius answers common questions about high blood pressure. More about the possible causes, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment read in the respective chapters of this guide (see the review above or Chapter bar below).

Blades and clades: Why some grasses got better photosynthesis

Dec. 24, 2012 ? Even on the evolutionary time scale of tens of millions of years there is such a thing as being in the right shape at the right time. An anatomical difference in the ability to seize the moment, according to a study led by Brown University biologists, explains why more species in one broad group, or clade, of grasses evolved a more efficient means of photosynthesis than species in another clade did.

Their findings appear this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Biologists refer to the grasses that have evolved this better means of making their food in warm, sunny and dry conditions with the designation "C4." Grasses without that trait are labeled "C3."

What scientists had already known is that while all of the grasses in the BEP and PACMAD clades have the basic metabolic infrastructure to become C4 grasses, the species that have actually done so are entirely in the PACMAD clade. A four-nation group of scientists wondered why that disparity exists.

To find out, Brown postdoctoral researcher and lead author Pascal-Antoine Christin spent two years closely examining the cellular anatomy of 157 living species of BEP and PACMAD grasses. Using genetic data the team also organized the species into their evolutionary tree, which they then used to infer the anatomical traits of ancestral grasses that no longer exist today, a common analytical technique known as ancestral state reconstruction. That allowed them to consider how anatomical differences likely evolved among species over time.

Paradoxically, to understand C4 evolution, the researchers focused on the anatomy of C3 grasses in each clade.

In general what they found was that in the leaves of many PACMAD C3 grasses the veins were closer together, and that the veins themselves were surrounded by larger cells ("bundle sheath" cells) than in BEP C3 grasses. Ultimately PACMAD grasses had a higher ratio of bundle sheath cells to mesophyll cells (cells that fill in the area between veins).

In C4 plants, such an anatomical arrangement facilitates a more efficient transfer and processing of CO2 in the bundle sheath cells when CO2 is in relatively short supply. When temperatures get hot or plants become stressed, they stop taking in as much CO2, creating just such a shortage within the leaf.

So PACMADs as a group had developed an anatomical predisposition to C4 photosynthesis that BEP grasses didn't, said senior author Erika Edwards, an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Brown.

"We found that consistently these PACMAD C3s are very different anatomically than the C3 BEPs," she said. "We think that was the evolutionary stepping stone to C4-like physiology."

When the new leaves turned over

It didn't used to be this way. Back around 60 or so million years ago, BEP and PACMAD grasses were more similar and both headed in the same direction. The distance between the leaf veins in both clades had been growing closer together. But then they started to diverge in a key way. The bundle sheath cells surrounding the veins in BEP grasses started to shrink down while those in PACMAD grasses stayed larger.

For a long time the climate didn't particularly punish or reward either of those directions. But then climate changed, and opportunity knocked, Edwards said. Only PACMAD was near the proverbial door.

"When atmospheric CO2 decreased tens of millions of years after the split of the BEP and PACMAD clades, a combination of shorter [distances between veins] and large [sheath] cells existed only in members of the PACMAD clade, limiting C4 evolution to this lineage," Christin and co-authors wrote in the paper.

The researchers also found that evolution among C4 grasses was anatomically nuanced. Some C4 grasses evolved because of advantageous changes in outer sheath cells, while others saw the improvement in inner sheath cells.

Ultimately, Edwards said, studies like this one show that plant biologists have made important progress in understanding the big picture of when and where important plant traits evolved. That could lead to further advances in both basic science, and perhaps agriculture as well.

"Now that we have this increasingly detailed birds-eye view, we can start to become a more predictive science," she said. "Now we have the raw goods to ask interesting questions about why, for example, one trait evolves 10 times in this region of the tree but never over here. In terms of genetic engineering we're going to be able to provide some useful information to people who want to improve species, such as important crops."

In addition to Christin and Edwards, the paper's other authors at Brown were David Chatelet and Laura Garrison. Other authors were Colin Osborne of the University of Sheffield in the U.K.; J. Travis Columbus of Claremont Graduate University in California; Guillaume Besnard of the Universite Paul Sabatier-Ecole Nationale de Formation Agronomique in Tolouse, France; Trevor Hodkinson of Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland; and Maria Vorontsova of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Surrey, U.K.

The National Science Foundation (grants 0920147 and 0843231), the Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowship (252568) and the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (10LABX-41) supported the research.

Amazon deforestation brings loss of microbial communities

Dec. 24, 2012 ? An international team of microbiologists led by Klaus N?sslein of the University of Massachusetts Amherst has found that a troubling net loss in diversity among the microbial organisms responsible for a functioning ecosystem is accompanying deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.

N?sslein, an expert in tropical rain forest microbial soil communities, says, "We found that after rainforest conversion to agricultural pastures, bacterial communities were significantly different from those of forest soils. Not only did the pasture soils show increased species numbers, these species were also less related to one another than in rainforest soil. This is important because the combination of lost forest species and the homogenization of pasture communities together signal that this ecosystem is now a lot less capable of dealing with additional outside stress."

He and colleagues studied a large farm site over the past four years at the frontier where farmers drive agriculture into pristine rainforest in Rondonia, Brazil, to convert rainforest to agricultural use. Findings in part validated previous research showing that bacteria in the soil became more diverse after conversion to pasture. However, in its fourth year, their study overcame limitations of earlier investigations to show that changes in microbial diversity occurred over larger geographic scales. Results appear in the current issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In addition to N?sslein at UMass Amherst, the research group includes first author Jorge Rodrigues at the University of Texas at Arlington with Brendan Bohannan at the University of Oregon, James Tiedje at Michigan State University, and others at the University of Sao Paulo. Lead investigators N?sslein and Rodrigues emphasize that the study is an equal collaboration among the four research groups.

Findings do not support earlier study conclusions, instead they show that the loss of restricted ranges for different bacteria communities results in a biotic homogenization and net loss of diversity overall. Scientists worry that the loss of genetic variation in bacteria across a converted forest could reduce ecosystem resilience. The researchers hope their work will provide valuable data to those making decisions about the future of the Amazon rainforest.

Biologist and first author Jorge Rodrigues of the University of Texas at Arlington adds, "We have known for a long time that conversion of rainforest land in the Amazon for agriculture results in a loss of biodiversity in plants and animals. Now we know that microbial communities which are so important to the ecosystem also suffer significant losses."

As N?sslein and colleagues point out, the Amazon represents half of the world's rainforest and is home to one-third of Earth's species, yet the Amazon has one of the highest rates of deforestation. Agriculture is one of the largest and most dynamic parts of Brazil's economy, so dealing with standing rainforests in the tropics will be tricky, but nevertheless, it is vital that the issue is tackled."

Rodrigues says he and colleagues are currently compiling findings about the potential for recovery of the microbial diversity after pastureland is abandoned and returned to "secondary forest." At the same time, N?sslein and colleagues are leading an effort to investigate how the redundancy of functions provided by soil microbes provides resilience to the effects of agricultural land use change to support a stressed ecosystem to recover stability.

"Whether bacterial diversity will completely recover from ecosystem conversion will depend in part on whether the taxa lost due to conversion are truly locally extinct or whether they are present in the pasture sites but of such low abundance that they are undetectable in our study," the authors write.

This work was supported by grants from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture and the Research Support Foundation of the State of S?o Paulo.

Muhammad Shahid Nazir, Fishmonger From Pakistan, Is England's Newest Star (VIDEO)

A fishmonger from Pakistan has become Britain's latest musical sensation after a song he sang at an East London fish market went viral on the Internet.

The song -- 'One Pound Fish' -- has been made into a video and is currently number 29 on the British charts.

Muhammad Shahid Nazir, a 31-year-old father of four from Pattoki in Pakistan, immigrated to the UK a year ago to earn some money and provide a better life for his wife and children back home, the Evening Standard reports.

He soon found a job at a fish stall in Queen's Market in London's Upton Park. Nazir says his boss asked him to "shout" to attract customers. But when that only managed to turn potential patrons away, he made up the now-famous song. The lyrics go something like this:

Come on ladies! Come on ladies!

One Pound Fish!
One Pound Fish!

Hava hava look!
One Pound Fish!

Hava hava look!
One Pound Fish!

Very very good!
One Pound Fish!

Very very cheap!
One Pound Fish!

After the song began attracting attention, Nazir was urged to audition for the X Factor, where he failed to impress judges. However, a clip of him singing in the market soon went viral, and he was offered a deal by Warner Music.

The song currently has 7 million hits on YouTube, and has since been covered by Timbaland and Alesha Dixon.

"My wife is happy, my family is happy, because they know singing is my passion from my childhood hobby ... they are saying: 'Your dream is coming complete now,'" Nazir told Al Jazeera.

Back in his native Pakistan, Nazir has become a star. According to the BBC, 'One Pound Fish' can be heard blaring from speakers all over Pattoki, and his family is praying for the song to hit number one on the Christmas charts.

For his part, Nazir is humbled by his unexpected success. He tweeted that despite his newfound fame, he is still only a "market trader."

medicate sophi: charlesmurra8: Speed reading apps for android ...

23 Dec

I installed some speed reading apps and tested them. I?ve so far notices a few ?categories? or groups of equals:

  • One kind exists mostly from showing a text word by word in the middle of the screen. Showing each word a very short time and so you can read at a high wpm because you never need to move your eyes.
  • Another kind is merely a speed reading article disguised as app.
  • Another kind is no speed reading app but just a reading app with a fancy name.
  • Yet another kind is training in the form of news/actually.
  • And the last kind is a training app, not for your own stuff but purely for training.

I only tested them quickly and unions talked the non-interesting. But they aren?t quite what I?m looking for. Maybe I should write one myself for training and guided reading.

Firemen's killer left chilling note, deaths at 3

WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) ? An ex-con killed two firefighters with the same caliber and make military-style rifle used in the Connecticut school massacre after typing a note pledging to burn down his neighborhood and "do what I like doing best, killing people," police said Tuesday as another body, believed to be the gunman's missing sister, was found.

William Spengler, 62, who served 17 years in prison for manslaughter in the 1980 hammer slaying of his grandmother, set his house afire before dawn Christmas Eve before taking a revolver, a shotgun and a semiautomatic rifle to a sniper position outside, Police Chief Gerald Pickering said.

The death toll rose to three as police revealed that a body believed to be the killer's 67-year-old sister, Cheryl Spengler, was found in his fire-ravaged home.

Authorities say he sprayed bullets at the first responders, killing two firefighters and injuring two others who remained hospitalized Tuesday in stable condition, awake and alert and expected to survive. He then killed himself as seven houses burned on a sliver of land along Lake Ontario.

Police recovered a military-style .223-caliber semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle with flash suppression, the same make and caliber weapon used in the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., that killed 26, including 20 young children, Pickering said.

The chief said it was believed the firefighters were hit with shots from the rifle given the distance but the investigation was incomplete.

"He was equipped to go to war, kill innocent people," the chief said.

The two- to three-page typewritten rambling note left by Spengler did not reveal what set off the killer or provide a motive for the shootings, Pickering said. He called the attack a "clear ambush on first responders."

He declined to reveal the note's full content or say where it was found. He read only one chilling line: "I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down, and do what I like doing best, killing people."

Pickering said it was unclear whether the person believed to be Spengler's sister died before or during the fire.

"It was a raging inferno in there," Pickering said.

A next-door neighbor said Spengler hated his sister and they lived on opposite sides of the house.

Roger Vercruysse said Spengler loved his mother, Arline, who died in October after living with her son and daughter in the house in a neighborhood of seasonal and year-round homes across the road from a lakeshore popular with recreational boaters.

As Pickering described it and as emergency radio communications on the scene showed, the heavily armed Spengler took a position behind a small hill by the house as four firefighters arrived after 5:30 a.m. to extinguish the fire: two on a fire truck; two in their own vehicles.

They were immediately greeted by bullets from Spengler, who wore dark clothing. Volunteer firefighter and police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, driving the truck, was killed by gunfire as the windshield before him was shattered. Also killed was Tomasz Kaczowka, 19, who worked as a 911 dispatcher.

Several firefighters went beneath the truck to shield themselves as an off-duty police officer who was passing by pulled his vehicle alongside the truck to try to shield them, authorities said.

The first police officer who arrived chased and exchanged shots with Spengler, recounting it later over his police radio.

"I could see the muzzle blasts comin' at me. ... I fired four shots at him. I thought he went down," the officer said.

At another point, he said: "I don't know if I hit him or not. He's by a tree. ... He was movin' eastbound on the berm when I was firing shots." Pickering portrayed him as a hero who saved many lives.

The audio posted on the website RadioReference.com also has someone reporting "firefighters are down" and saying "got to be rifle or shotgun ? high-powered ... semi or fully auto."

Spengler had been charged with murder in his grandmother's death but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter, apparently to spare his family a trial. After he was freed from prison, Spengler ? a felon who wasn't allowed to possess weapons ? had lived a quiet life on Lake Road on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario.

That ended when he left his burning home Monday morning, armed with his three weapons and a lot of ammunition.

"I'm not sure we'll ever know what was going through his mind," Pickering said.

Django Unchained Movie Review | Film School Rejects

DJANGO UNCHAINED

Quentin Tarantino has very quickly, but not so quietly, found a new niche for his filmmaking talents as a teller of tall tales with a historical bent. He?s less interested in historical accuracy than he is historical tomfoolery, but that never lessens the sheer entertainment he finds in mankind?s relatively recent foibles and misdeeds. From Inglourious Basterds? band of World War II Nazi-killers to his latest film?s vengeful slave turned bounty hunter, Tarantino has shown a knack for fitting his charismatic and electric characters into unexpected historical contexts with entertaining as hell results.

It?s 1858 in America, and Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) is a dentist on a mission. It?s light on tooth decay, heavy on bloodshed and utterly unrelated to the field of dentistry. He?s a bounty hunter whose latest targets, The Brittle Brothers, present a challenge in that he has no idea what they look like. Undeterred, Schultz acquires, apprentices and befriends a slave named Django (Jamie Foxx) who can identify the brothers. In exchange the ex-dentist will help the newly freed Django reunite with his wife, Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), who currently belongs to a cruel but undeniably charming plantation owner named Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).

What follows is a tale that would have made American History class a hell of a lot more memorable as Schultz and Django cut a bloody swath across the post-Civil War South through racists, enforcers and recognizable TV actors (Tom Wopat! Lee Horsley!) from decades past. The cinematic violence is paired with Tarantino?s typically sharp and often hilarious dialogue, an eclectic and anachronistic soundtrack and a roster of actors as thrilled to be onscreen as viewers will be watching them. Despite its subject matter Django Unchained is a somewhat slighter film than its predecessor and sometimes feels too comically broad and bloated, but as with David Fincher and the Coen brothers even Tarantino?s lesser films often exceed the best that others have to offer.

Schultz and Django work their way through a handful of wanted men, and while some of it is accomplished via montage and time lapse we?re shown Django?s entry into the business by way of the Brittle Brothers in vibrant detail. They?re tracked to Big Daddy?s (Don Johnson) plantation, a bright and faux-happy land that a racist, meat-eating incarnation of Colonel Sanders would be happy to call home. The laughs are plentiful, but when the violence comes it?s with the brutal crack of a whip and the generous spurting of dark red blood (done practically as opposed to via CGI).

Two of Tarantino?s biggest strengths have always been his scripts and his casts so it?s no surprise that both are highlights again here. Script-wise the film boasts some brilliant and eminently quotable dialogue that shies away from punch lines as infrequently as it does the n-word. It?s laugh out loud funny, but while it (unsurprisingly) finds much to exploit in the world of slavery, lynchings and casual murder it still allows for some serious and harsh exchanges and instances. It?s most definitely not for the squeamish.

All three leads give fine and fun performances and truly embrace their characters with enthusiasm. Waltz gets many of the best lines and proves again how wonderfully suited he is for Tarantino?s words. Foxx does well too as he manages the tightrope between the solemnity of the subject matter and the playfulness of the execution. If there?s a stand out though it?s DiCaprio?s turn as the malicious and easily offended Candie. Subtlety is not an option and DiCaprio lets his inner evil loose with a mustache-twirling, scene-stealing performance that refuses to let the fun stray too far from the cruelty. The supporting cast is equally memorable with appearances by Walter Goggins, Franco Nero, Michael Parks, James Remar (twice!) and others. Last but not least, Samuel L Jackson plays the film?s darkest bad guy (pun not intended) as Candie?s well-treated house servant who turns other slaves in for severe punishment at the drop of an N-bomb.

As entertaining as it is though, the film is a step back from the multi-layered high of Inglourious Basterds. While that film has loads of surface level entertainment it also features a smart subtext on movies and movie-making that runs parallel to its tale of Nazi scalping and familial revenge. Django is all surface by comparison. Clearly there?s a none too subtle criticism of slavery and racism, but that?s more common sense than commentary.

It also has pacing issues most notable when Tarantino brings the movie to a stirring, crimson-colored conclusion only to let it keep going for another twenty-five odd minutes. Prior to the film?s natural end there?s only one scene that probably should have hit the cutting room floor (even if it is a very funny ode to Blazing Saddles), but this near thirty minutes of extra ending marks the first time that the film begins to feel long. There?s a temptation to blame the absence of his longtime editor Sally Menke, but it?s clear the excess is all due to Tarantino. The section contains laughs and thrills to be sure, but it still feels unnecessary.

Still, not every film needs to be a masterpiece (self-declared or otherwise). Sometimes ?damn good? is more than good enough.

The Upside: Very funny; violence is often ridiculous and wonderfully bloody; actors are having an infectiously great time; damn nice seeing amble blood squibs used instead of CGI

The Downside: Runs twenty or so minutes too long; comedy often feels too broad; lacks additional subtext; subterfuge used against Mr. Candie seems wholly unnecessary and illogical; someone needs to tell Tarantino that his cameos are his films? low point

On the Side: The role of Django was originally intended for Will Smith, but the actor decided to make After Earth with M. Night Shyamalan instead, so everyone be sure to send a Thank You note to Mr. Shyamalan

Kate Middleton Handmakes Christmas Cards, According To Sister, Pippa

There's a constant buzz about Kate Middleton's effortless style and of course, her newly announced pregnancy, but who knew the Duchess had such a crafty past?

According to Daily News and Analysis, her sister Pippa Middleton, revealed in her book Celebrate, that when she and her siblings were younger, they would handmake their own Christmas cards. "When I was a child, my December weekends were spent making cards, decorating the tree, hanging the wreath and preparing brandy butter and peppermint creams,? she wrote.

The younger Middleton also said that every December the family repeats these family traditions. And since it was announced that the Royal couple will be spending Christmas with the Middletons? we?re hoping that means some DIYing.

Though, considering Kate?s recent health issues, the Duchess and Prince William might not be getting out their glue guns and glitter anytime soon, but it is nice to know that the Royal baby will have some crafty genes.
