The Gizmon iCA Might Be The Ultimate iPhone Camera Case

icaThere are iPhone cases and then there are...more iPhone cases. There are probably close to a gazillion different iPhone cases available now. But none are as elaborate as the Gizmon iCA -- at least none I have seen. The case -- if you call it just a case -- is made of 32 different polycarbonate parts, it features a conversion lens mount with additional optional lenses, and adds a working shutter button and optical viewfinder. There is even an optional faux pancake lens for additional street cred with the camera nerds. It gets better, too. No, seriously, this contraption is genius.

Global stocks mixed on concern about US, Europe (AP)

BEIJING ? Global stock markets were mixed Tuesday amid worries about weak Christmas sales in the United States and Europe and a warning by Japan's central bank about possible risks from the European debt crisis.

Tokyo lost 0.5 percent to 8,440.56 while China's benchmark Shanghai index dropped nearly 1.1 percent to 2,166.21. Seoul, Taipei, Singapore and Jakarta declined. Hong Kong and Sydney were closed.

In Europe, France's CAC 40 opened up 0.3 percent at 3,111.37 while Germany's DAX also gained 0.3 percent to 5,897.57.

Pessimistic Asian investors expect upcoming indicators including Chinese manufacturing and Christmas retail sales in key Western markets to be lackluster, said Peng Yunliang, a market strategist for Shanghai Securities.

"The markets expect these data will be no good," Peng said. "Some people think sales data from Christmas in the United States and Europe will not be as good as last year."

China's government reported Tuesday that profit growth slowed at its major industrial companies. Total profit in the January-November period rose 24.4 percent over a year earlier, down 0.9 percent from the growth rate for the first 10 months of the year.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 declined after the Bank of Japan released notes that showed a Finance Ministry representative warning at a November meeting the world's third-largest economy faces "significant downside risks" due to Europe's debt problems.

Wall Street and European stock markets were closed Monday because Christmas fell on a Sunday this year.

Elsewhere in Asia, Seoul's Kospi shed 0.8 percent to 1,842.02 while Taiwan's Taiex lost 0.1 percent to 7,085.03. Singapore's benchmark was off 0.1 percent at 2,673.18. Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur also declined.

Chinese losses were led by media, information technology, food and travel-related companies.

Dairy shares fell after China's biggest milk producer said Monday it destroyed a batch found to be contaminated with a potentially cancer-causing toxin. Zhejiang Beingmate Scientific Industrial Trade Co., an infant formula producer, lost 6.8 percent while Bright Dairy & Food Co. shed 4.1 percent.

Asian investors are closely watching Europe, whose debt crisis already has hurt demand for exports from China and other major producers.

In the last pre-holiday U.S. trading day on Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average added 1 percent while the Nasdaq composite index gained 0.7 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.9 percent.

Benchmark crude for February delivery was down 14 cents at $99.54 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

In currencies, the euro was up 0.1 percent at $1.3065 while the dollar held steady at 77.91 yen.

Christmas Presents Thief Busted by iPad Tracking Signal

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. (KTLA) -- Technology, and some top-notch police work, saved Christmas for two Southern California families.

On Christmas morning, a homeowner in Westlake Village was awakened by a noise, and found an intruder inside his house, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. said in a news release.

The victim chased the suspect a short distance, but the intruder got away.

It was discovered that, among other items, an iPad was taken from the victim's home.

Later that same morning, the victim called the Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff's station to say that the stolen iPad was giving a signal from a nearby home.

Deputies responded to the location and recovered the iPad.

They arrested 20-year-old Patrick Krewson, a resident of Vista, in San Diego County.

Detectives conducted a follow-up investigation, and connected Krewson to a burglary in Vista on Dec. 22.

Two flat-screen televisions, a laptop computer and more than 40 Christmas presents intended for children were stolen in that burglary.

Deputies searched Krewson's home in Vista and found all of the stolen property, including the presents.

When detectives notified the Vista victim that her Christmas presents had been found in time to give them to the children for Christmas, she began to cry, authorities said.

Krewson was booked for burglary at the Malibu/Lost Hills Station, and is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

San Diego County Sheriff?s Department will file additional burglary charges.

Knicks beat Celtics as season gets under way (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The National Basketball Association (NBA) season belatedly got underway on Christmas Day, with the New York Knicks wrapping up a 106-104 victory over the Boston Celtics.

Carmelo Anthony was the top performer for New York, scoring 37 points as the Knicks ran out winners in an exciting opener to the shortened 66-game season.

The season was supposed to start last month but was almost cancelled because of a protracted labor dispute between players and team owners.

When they finally reached a new collective bargaining agreement, that was ratified on December 8, it was decided to start on Christmas Day, leaving teams just 17 days to get their rosters filled, get into brief training camps, have a couple of warm-ups and get ready for Sunday's openers.

But the wrangling and disputes seemed long forgotten as the two Eastern Conference teams took to the court at Madison Square Garden in front of a lively crowd that included singer Alicia Keys and former tennis champion John McEnroe.

The Knicks were fastest out of the blocks taking a 34-23 lead at the end of the first quarter and leaving Celtics head coach Doc Rivers fuming at his team, telling them they were playing soft".

Boston trailed 62-52 at half-time but piled on 35 points in the third quarter to lead by eight heading into the last period.

The Celtics had won their last eight games against the Knicks but New York, bolstered by the addition of center Tyston Chandler, fought back this time.

Anthony's two free throws with 16.3 seconds left proved to be the game winners as Boston failed to score again, Marquis Daniels missing a three pointer from the side then Kevin Garnett missing a 16 footer at the buzzer.

Rajon Rondo was the top scorer for Boston with 31 points while Anthony scored 17 points in the last quarter for New York.

"We willed that win," said Anthony, who joined the Knicks from Denver in February.

"It wasn't easy, we knew it was going to be a battle. We got up early, Boston being the veteran team that they are, they came back and made some runs but we stuck with it and won it," he said.

Act as if You're Being Filmed at Work [Video]

Act as if You're Being Filmed at Work Most of us have seen the YouTube video of a FedEx driver throwing a computer monitor over a fence. This driver will probably be facing pretty stiff disciplinary action. If he had acted as though he knew he was being recorded he might have done his best to gently place the package over the fence. The resulting video would not have gone viral and the driver might now be up for a raise instead of a reprimand.

Personal Finance weblog The Simple Dollar points out that most of us are fortunate enough not to have our worst days at work broadcast over the internet, but the best way to establish a career reputation is to always behave at work as though you're being recorded. This will keep you from taking shortcuts and doing things like throwing away a stack of paperwork rather than dealing with it. Video by goobie55

PFT: Colts may blow their chance to pick Luck

New York Giants v Dallas CowboysGetty Images

Since 2006, the league has been using a flexible schedule on Sunday nights to ensure that a competitive and interesting game always will occupy the prime-time slot.? In most weeks of flex scheduling, the decision comes at least 12 days before the games are played.? For Week 17, the decision usually is made after the full Week 16 slate of games has been played, and it?s unveiled no later than six days before the final Sunday.

Unlike all other weeks of flexible scheduling, no game has even tentatively been placed in the 8:20 p.m. ET time slot.? Instead, all games have a 1:00 p.m. or 12:00 p.m. local time kickoff (for three games due to start at 4:15 p.m. ET, it?s a 1:15 p.m. local start), and the NFL will choose one of those 16 games to be the final act of the regular season, since no Monday night game is played in Week 17.

The goal every year becomes finding a game with clear playoff implications that can?t be resolved based on the outcomes of games played earlier in the day.? And that?s not always an easy thing to do.

Last year, only the Seahawks and Rams provided a clear-cut pre-playoff game, with the winner capturing the NFC West and the loser being bounced from the postseason field ? regardless of the final score of any other game played that day.

This year, a game with obvious playoff implications regardless of what happens elsewhere could be hard to find.? Here?s a quick glance at the potential relevance of each game.

Redskins at Eagles:? Since Philly?s shot at winning the NFC East would hinge (if it survives Week 16) on the Giants beating the Cowboys, this game could be irrelevant.

Lions at Packers:? Green Bay?s clinching of the top seed, if they don?t have it after this weekend, would come if the 49ers lose to the Rams in Week 17.? Also, losses by other teams would deliver a Detroit playoff berth, if Detroit doesn?t clinch it this weekend.? Then again, whether the Packers have the No. 1 or No. 2 seed really isn?t that big of a deal in the grander scheme of things.

Ravens at Bengals:? Depending on the Week 16 games, this game could have implications for the AFC North title, the No. 2 seed, and the final wild-card berth.? But those implications could become irrelevant based on the other games played in Week 17, which makes this game less attractive for prime time.

Jets at Dolphins:? Again, Week 16 will provide more clarity.? With the Jets and Bengals each 8-6, however, it?s unlikely that the Jets will have a clear win-and-in, lose-and-leave scenario that would apply regardless of what the Bengals do against the Ravens.

Panthers at Saints:? New Orleans could be playing for the No. 2 seed and/or the NFC South crown, but those could be decided via losses earlier in the day by the Falcons or the 49ers.

Buccaneers at Falcons:? If the Falcons still haven?t clinched a playoff berth after Monday night, losses by others could deliver the spot earlier in the day on January 1.

49ers at Rams:? San Fran is jockeying for the No. 2 or No. 1 seed, which if still relevant after Week 16 could be completely irrelevant before 8:20 p.m. ET in Week 17.

Bills at Patriots:? The Pats are playing for the top seed, but the outcomes of the Steelers and Ravens games could strip this one of any remaining relevance.

Colts at Jaguars:? It?s very highly unlikely that the league would want to showcase the ?Suck for Luck? finale.? In 2008, for example, the NFL had no interest in televising in prime time the Lions? date with 0-16 destiny.

Titans at Texans:? Houston has an outside shot at a bye, but it will depend on the Steelers and Ravens games from earlier in the day.

Bears at Vikings:? This one would be attractive in prime time only for anyone who stayed up too late and drank too much on New Year?s Eve and doesn?t want to miss anything important.

Cowboys at Giants:? If the Giants beat the Jets on Saturday, the NFC East likely will hinge on this game, with the loser most likely being done.? It could be one of the best candidates for the prime-time slot, based on the clarity provided by Week 16.

Steelers at Browns:? Um, no.

Chiefs at Broncos:? The Broncos definitely will win the AFC West by beating the Chiefs.? The only problem is that the Broncos could nail it down before 8:20 p.m. ET on January 1, making the game irrelevant.

Seahawks at Cardinals:? It could be one of the best games of the day.? But it very likely will have zero relevance to the postseason.

Chargers at Raiders:? With the Broncos able to win the division by beating the Chiefs, there?s no reason to hold this one ? unless somehow it would present a clear-cut win-and-in for a wild-card berth for one of the two teams.

And so, for now, it appears that the best candidates are Cowboys-Giants and Chiefs-Broncos.? We?ll know more by Monday night.

In the end, there?s a chance that the NFL will simply have to assume a calculated risk that one or more of the outcomes earlier in the day will screw up the New Year?s Night party on NBC.

DIY solar panels head to Africa

Mark Kragh explains how to make a solar-powered mobile phone charger

In a north London suburban street there is an unassuming wooden door which leads into a garage-cum-workshop which at first glance is remarkable only for a drum kit at one end.

A second glance reveals a bunch of solar panels stacked against the wall and a man, busy breaking them up and reassembling them in a very home-made fashion.

The end result is DIY solar kits that can recharge phones and batteries. They look makeshift but they have the potential to make a huge difference to people thousands of miles away in Kenya.

As the director of KnowYourPlanet, Mark Kragh's day job is to resell solar panels to small businesses and hobbyists.

But in February he will travel to Kenya to distribute specially-made kits he is giving away as charity, and to show local people how to make more.

Solar scrap

For many in Africa there is little access to electricity due to mains power shortages. Infrastructure has not kept pace with the explosion in mobile phone ownership so it is not unusual for people to walk for several hours just to charge their phones.

"Often, charge points are driven by petrol or diesel generators, which are dangerous to operate and of course emit carbon dioxide and other pollutants. A daily phone charge can cost a considerable amount relative to people's wages," said Mr Kragh.

He was inspired by a chance conversation with a friend to experiment with using solar power as an alternative method to charging phones and batteries.

"The project started a few years back when my friend in Senegal asked me if I had any cheap options for solar power for Africa. I told him that PV [photovoltaics] was way too expensive and not a viable option, it required batteries and many other components and he should just forget about it.

"I kept thinking about this, could this really be true? Why could we not use a renewable energy? So I did some research and realised there was an entire community of people who already make solar panels from scrap," he said.

He was also inspired by his grandmother Dr Elisabeth Svendsen, a lifelong charity worker who founded the UK's Donkey Sanctuary.

"She passed away this year but my granny travelled in Africa for 40 years, hands-on with all the good and bad that brought with it. She made a huge impact on the local people's lives and I hope that I will be able to carry on this work in my own way," he said.

Locally sourced

The kits he creates are made from solar panels that manufacturers have rejected.

"There are very strict rules," said Mr Kragh.

Slight chips in the corner render the panels useless for traditional solar energy use but perfect for the DIY kits Mr Kragh has designed.

He aims to make them deliberately makeshift, creating a fairly crude circuit of solar panels on plywood.

The panels also require some more sophisticated kit.

"Initially we will bring specialised materials with us such as voltage regulators, UV stable encapsulants, solar cells and PV ribbon," said Mr Kragh.

But over time he hopes to be able to source components locally.

"To start with that would be glass, LEDs, batteries, wood and metal, wires and connectors. A great part of the pilot is simply testing and trying lots of non-solar materials to see what works," he said.

"Our main concern is the intense sun which causes degradation due to the high levels of heat and UV rays," he added.

Armed with a ?5,000 grant from charity World in Need, Mr Kragh aims to build at least 1,000 kits when he arrives, training local people along the way so that they can build new ones and service old ones.

The ultimate goal is to create a $1 (64p) solar charger which has at least a five year lifespan.

"We aim to train local people in these techniques to create cottage industries, giving people locally the opportunity to generate income and keep currency in the community, rather than pay European and Chinese manufacturers and distribution chains and retail networks," said Mr Kragh.

And, in case you were wondering about the drum kit in the corner of his garage - it is for letting off steam and celebrating good deals. Come March Mr Kragh will be hoping to sound out a distinctly African beat.

Miley Cyrus Movie Opening Delayed Due to Scandal, Lack of Funds

Whether or not Miley Cyrus was joking about her affection for marijuana, the star's recent scandal has had a negative impact on her big screen career.

Sources confirm that Miley's next movie - the comedy LOL, which also stars Demi Moore and Ashley Greene - was scheduled for an international release in either late 2011 or early 2012. However, that opening has now been scrapped in large part due to last-minute editing out of a scene in which Miley's character smokes cigarettes with her friends.

Producers are hoping to avoid any and all controversy related to this topic.

LOL Movie Poster

So, when might LOL hit American theaters? That is also uncertain, as Lionsgate is facing significant financial problems.

The studio simply can't afford to market the film and is reportedly hoping to make enough bank on The Hunger Games - which, ironically, stars Miley's boyfriend, Liam Hemsworth - this spring to then turn its efforts back over to Cyrus and company.

LOL is based a remake of a French hit and centers on Lola (Cyrus) and her teenage pals, as they navigate the world of high school romance and friendship.

Vin Diesel Confirms Seventh Fast and Furious Film Being Developed (omg!)

Vin Diesel Confirms Seventh Fast and Furious Film Being Developed

Vin Diesel needn't worry about job security over the next few years.

The sixth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise will be split into two movies, the 44-year-old star and producer announced Wednesday. Directed by Justin Lin, Diesel said the two scripts are being written simultaneously.

PHOTOS: Thrill seeking stars

"With the success of this last one, and the inclusion of so many characters, and the broadening of scope, when we were sitting down to figure out what would fit into the real estate of number six, we didn't have enough space," Diesel explained to The Hollywood Reporter.

Since The Fast and the Furious debuted in 2001, the five films have generated $1.6 billion worldwide at the box office. Its most recent installment, Fast Five, starred Diesel, Paul Walker, 38, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, 39, Jordana Brewster, 31, and Tyrese Gibson, 32; it garnered $626 million worldwide.

PHOTOS: Stars on wheels

"We have to pay off this story, we have to service all of these character relationships, and when we started mapping all that out it just went beyond 110 pages," Diesel explained. "The studio said, 'You can't fit all that story in one damn movie!'"

Walker insists there's more depth to the series than audiences might realize.

PHOTOS: Which movies did you see this year?

"It's not about the action and the cars, which initially appealed to me when I was 25 years old," he tells The Hollywood Reporter. "Because if that's all it was, it would have fallen off a long time ago."

Sandra Bullock On 'Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close' Screen Time, Comeback (VIDEO)

Following her Oscar win for 2009's "The Blindside," Sandra Bullock decided to leave show business for a little while. With a new son and a divorce, she had a lot to deal with, to say the very least. Now, she's making her comeback, but instead of a major starring role, she's playing support in an upcoming ensemble tearjerker.

Bullock co-stars in "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" as the widow of a man, played by Tom Hanks, who died in the September 11th attacks in New York City. She has only 24-minutes of screen time, as she mostly plays guide to her on-screen son Thomas Horn as he searches for a secret he believes his father left for him before he died.

The Oscar-winner spoke with the Today Show on Thursday about the decision to star in the Jonathan Safron Foer novel adaptation, eschewing ego for a chance to feature in a film that really moved her.

"I've already had those moments [as a leading lady], I think," she said. "I mean, there might be more, I don't know, but I don't know how many moments and opportunities like this there'll be -- with stories like this, with directors and casts like this -- It's like the rare moments in life where all the elements are there, and they all come together for some strange or bigger reason. You can't say no to that."

Russian customs seize Iran-bound radioactive metal

(AP) ? Russia's customs agency said Friday that it seized radioactive metal from the luggage of an Iranian passenger bound for Tehran.

Spokeswoman Kseniya Grebenkina told The Associated Press that the luggage had been seized some time ago, but could not specify when. The Iranian hasn't been detained, she said.

The Federal Customs Service said in a statement that its agents found 18 pieces of metal at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport after a radiation alert went on. It says the gauges showed that radiation levels were 20 times higher than normal.

It was not immediately clear if the substance could have any use in Iran's controversial nuclear program.

The pieces contained Sodium-22, she said, a radioactive isotope of sodium that could be produced in a particle accelerator. Sodium-22 is a positron-emitting isotope that has medical uses, including in nuclear medicine imaging.

Grebenkina said prosecutors have launched a probe into the incident.

Sergei Novikov, spokesman for the Rosatom nuclear agency, told the AP that the pieces are highly unlikely to have come from Rosatom and said the isotope is produced by particle accelerators, not by nuclear reactors.

In Russia, universities, research institutes and big medical centers have the technology to produce it, he said.

"There is an extremely slim chance that it could have come from Rosatom," he said.

Novikov said that Rosatom has never sold Sodium-22 to Iran, but it has supplied it with other types of medical isotopes.

Grebenkina of the Customs Service insisted that the material seized is not highly radioactive.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday endorsed harsher sanctions against Iran aimed at derailing its suspected pursuit of nuclear weapons. Iran denies Western allegations that it is seeking to build nuclear weapons.

Earlier this year, Atomstroiexport, a Rosatom subsidiary, launched Iran's first nuclear reactor in Bushehr.

Russian officials have insisted that the deal with Iran is in line with international agreements and will oblige Tehran to ship all the spent fuel from the plant back to Russia for reprocessing to avoid a possibility of it being used in a covert weapons program.

Strong yen batters business confidence in Japan (AP)

TOKYO ? Confidence at major Japanese manufacturers fell over the last quarter, as the export-reliant country battled a strong yen and an increasingly precarious global economy, a key central bank survey showed Thursday.

In the Bank of Japan's "tankan" survey of business sentiment, the main index for big manufacturers fell to minus 4, in the first deterioration in two quarters. Three months ago, it stood at 2, as companies rebounded from the devastating March earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.

The figure represents the percentage of companies saying business conditions are good minus those saying conditions are unfavorable, with 100 representing the best mood and minus 100 the worst.

The result is slightly worse than Kyodo News agency's average market forecast for a reading of minus 2.

The tankan "underscored the faltering Japanese economy, which rebounded impressively from the March disaster until early summer but lost its steam from then mainly due to the external factors," said Masamichi Adachi, senior economist at JPMorgan Securities Japan, in a note to clients.

The world's No. 3 economy expanded at an annualized rate of 5.6 percent during the July-September period in a robust recovery from the earthquake and tsunami. But that pace has already slowed considerably in the face of global headwinds, economists say.

Large manufacturers certainly don't expect to feel better anytime soon. The central bank forecasts the index to fall to minus 5 over the next three months.

Japan has been battling a strong yen, which has hit multiple historic highs this year against the dollar. Amid Europe's debt problems and economic uncertainty in the U.S., global investors have looked to the Japanese currency as a relatively safe haven.

But Japan relies on exports to drive growth and offset a rapidly aging and shrinking population at home. The yen's appreciation has hit companies such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Sony Corp. hard. When the yen climbs, it reduces the value of exporters' overseas profits when repatriated to Japan.

That has pushed companies to shift more production overseas, prompting worries about a hollowing out of Japanese industry.

Toyota, poised to lose its title as the world's biggest automaker this year, last week sharply downgraded its earnings forecast for the fiscal year through March and warned of the long-term impact of the runaway yen.

"Because of the strong yen, the collapse of the foundation of Japanese manufacturing has begun," Executive Vice President Satoshi Ozawa said.

The most pessimistic of the big manufacturing group was the electrical machinery sector ? including audio and video equipment ? which tumbled to minus 21 from minus 5. Companies doing business in nonferrous metals and heavy machinery also recorded big declines.

The auto industry, however, showed surprising resilience. Its index jumped seven points to 20, despite the yen and recent parts supply problems due to the flooding in Thailand.

Big non-manufacturers were feeling more optimistic as well. Their confidence index rose to 4 from 1 three months earlier.

The reading for medium-sized manufacturers was flat at minus 3, while the small manufacturers index improved to minus 8, up from minus 11.

The survey, which helps guide monetary policy, showed that large companies overall plan to boost capital spending by 1.4 percent this fiscal year through March 2012. The figure is down from 3 percent in the September survey.

Large manufacturing companies assume an average exchange rate of 79.02 yen per dollar for this fiscal year, compared with 81.15 yen three months ago.

Big companies expect profits to retreat 9 percent this fiscal year after jumping 46 percent last year.

The Bank of Japan surveyed 10,846 companies nationwide between Nov. 14 and Dec. 14. About 99 percent responded.

The bank's next policy board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. It is expected to keep its key interest rate near zero.

It's the most wonderful time of the year for throwback crooner Michael Bublé. His holiday album, Christmas, will easily hold on to the #1 slot on the Billboard 200 thanks to sales of just under 480,000, lifting his seven-week total to more than 1.5 million, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

And though they notched their highest chart debut ever and best first-week sales to date, modern blues duo the Black Keys had to settle for #2 and sales of 206,000 for El Camino. Late British R&B singer Amy Winehouse was back in the top 10 thanks to her first posthumous collection, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, which hit #5 on sales of 114,000.

Other top 10 debuts include the latest "Glee" cast album (#9, 58,000) and nü-metal veterans Korn's dip into the dubstep sound, Path of Totality (#10, 55,000). The rest of the top 10: Adele, 21 (#3, 187,000), Justin Bieber, Under the Mistletoe (#4, 158,000), Andrea Bocelli, Concerto: One Night in Central Park (#6, 79,000), Drake, Take Care (#7, 73,000) and Nickelback's Here and Now (#8, 66,000).

Further down the line, the Roots entered the charts at #17 with Undun (48,000), rockers Chevelle were at #20 with Hats Off to the Bull (43,000), smooth loverman Robin Thicke slid in at #22 with Love After War (41,000) and T-Pain's comeback disc, Revolver, had a modest debut at #28 (34,000).

As fans of the crime trilogy get ready to check out the David Fincher-directed take on "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," the Trent Reznor-created soundtrack for the film quietly slid onto the charts at #103 on sales of just under 11,000.

The top of the charts should remain pretty static next week as the only new titles hitting the top 200 are from R&B veteran Anthony Hamilton, a joint album by Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa and recently sprung rapper Gucci Mane's collaborative album with White Girl Mob rapper V-Nasty, Baytl.

New operating system for space: High-tech tycoons (AP)

SEATTLE ? The tycoons of cyberspace are looking to bankroll America's resurgence in outer space, reviving "Star Trek" dreams that first interested them in science.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen made the latest step Tuesday, unveiling plans for a new commercial spaceship that, instead of blasting off a launch pad, would be carried high into the atmosphere by the widest plane ever built before it fires its rockets.

He joins Silicon Valley powerhouses Elon Musk of PayPal and Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com Inc. in a new private space race that attempts to fill the gap left when the U.S. government ended the space shuttle program.

Musk, whose Space Exploration Technologies will send its Dragon capsule to dock with the International Space Station in February, will provide the capsule and booster rocket for Allen's venture, which is called Stratolaunch. Bezos is building a rival private spaceship.

Allen is working with aerospace pioneer Burt Rutan, who collaborated with the tycoon in 2004 to win a $10 million prize for the first flight of a private spaceship that went into space but not orbit.

Allen says his enormous airplane and spaceship system will go to "the next big step: a private orbital space platform business."

The new system is "a radical change" in how people can get to space, and it will "keep America at the forefront of space exploration," Allen said.

Their plane will have a 380-foot wingspan ? longer than a football field and wider than the biggest aircraft ever, Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose.

It will launch a space capsule equipped with a booster rocket, which will send the spacecraft into orbit. This method saves money by not using rocket fuel to get off the ground. The spaceship may hold as many as six people.

"When I was growing up, America's space program was the symbol of aspiration," said Allen, who mentioned his love of science fiction and early human spaceflights. "For me, the fascination with space never ended. I never stopped dreaming what might be possible."

For those attracted to difficult technical challenges, space is the ultimate challenge, Allen said.

"It's also the ultimate adventure. We all grew up devouring science fiction and watching Mercury and Gemini, Apollo and the space shuttle. And now we are able to be involved in moving things to the next level," he said, adding that he admires people like Simonyi who have gone into space to experience it.

Allen is not alone in having such dreams, and the money to gamble on making them come true.

Bezos set up the secretive private space company Blue Origin, which has received $3.7 million in NASA start-up funds to develop a rocket to carry astronauts. Its August flight test ended in failure.

"Space was the inspiration that got people into high-tech ... at least individuals in their 40s and 50s," said Peter Diamandis, who created the space prize Allen won earlier and is a high-tech mogul-turned space business leader himself. "Now they're coming full circle."

Diamandis helped found a company that sends tourists to space for at least $25 million a ride, and seven of the eight rides involved high-tech executives living out their space dreams. One is a former Microsoft colleague of Allen's, Charles Simonyi, who paid at least $20 million apiece for two rides into orbit and attended Allen's Tuesday news conference, saying he wouldn't mind a third flight.

"Space has a draw for humanity," not just high-tech billionaires, Simonyi said, but he acknowledged that most people don't have the cash to take that trip.

Space experts welcome the burst of high-tech interest in a technology that 50 years ago spurred the development of computers.

"Space travel the way we used to do it has a `50s and `60s ring to it," said retired George Washington University space policy professor John Logsdon. "These guys have a vision of revitalizing a sector that makes it 21st century."

But Logsdon said the size of the capsule and rocket going to space seemed kind of small to him, only carrying 13,000 pounds. It didn't seem like a game-changer, he said.

Stratolaunch's air-launch method is already used by an older rocket company, Orbital Sciences Corp., to launch satellites. It's also the same method used by the first plane to break the sound barrier more than 50 years ago.

Stratolaunch, to be based in Huntsville, Ala., bills its method of getting to space as "any orbit, any time." Rutan will build the carrier aircraft, which will use six 747 engines. The first unmanned test flight is tentatively scheduled for 2016.

NASA, in a statement, welcomed Allen to the space business, saying his plan "has the potential to make future access to low-Earth orbit more competitive, timely, and less expensive."

Unlike its competitors, Allen's company isn't relying on start-up money from NASA, which is encouraging private companies to take the load of hauling cargo and astronauts to low Earth orbit and the International Space Station. The space agency, which retired the space shuttle fleet earlier this year, plans to leave that more routine work to private companies and concentrate on deep space human exploration of an asteroid, the moon and even Mars.

Allen said his interest comes not just because of the end of the shuttle program or changes in government funding for space, but he does see an incredible opportunity right now for the private sector to move the needle on space travel.

Allen's company is looking at making money from tourists and launching small communications satellites, as well as from NASA and the Defense Department, said former NASA Administrator Michael Griffin, a Stratolaunch board member who spoke at a Tuesday news conference.

Just three months ago, Griffin was testifying before Congress that he thought the Obama administration's reliance on private companies for space travel "does not withstand a conventional business case analysis."

This is different because it's private money, with no help or dependence on government dollars, said Griffin, who served under President George W. Bush.

Allen and Rutan collaborated on 2004's SpaceShipOne, which was also launched in the air from a special aircraft in back-to-back flights. Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic licensed the technology and is developing SpaceShipTwo to carry tourists to space. But Allen's first efforts were more a hobby, while this would be more a business, Logsdon said.

SpaceShipOne cost $28 million, but this will cost much more, officials said.

Allen left Microsoft Corp. in 1983, and has pursued many varied interests since then. He's the owner of the Seattle Seahawks football team as well as the NBA's Portland Trailblazers. He also founded a Seattle museum that emphasizes science fiction.

Allen said this venture fits with his technology bent.

"I'm a huge fan of anything to push the boundaries of science," Allen said.

Rotating night shift work linked to increased risk of Type 2 diabetes in women, study finds

ScienceDaily (Dec. 7, 2011) ? Women who work a rotating (irregular) schedule that includes three or more night shifts per month, in addition to day and evening working hours in that month, may have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes when compared with women who only worked days or evenings, according to a new study led by researchers at Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH). In addition, the researchers found that extended years of rotating night shift work was associated with weight gain, which may contribute to the increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Previous studies have focused on the association between shift work and risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. The HSPH study is the largest study so far to look at the link between shift work and type 2 diabetes and the first large study to follow women. The findings were published online Dec. 6, 2011 in the open access journal PLoS Medicine.

"Long-term rotating night shift work is an important risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes and this risk increases with the numbers of years working rotating shifts," said An Pan, research fellow in HSPH's Department of Nutrition and the study's lead author.

The researchers, led by Pan and senior author Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology, analyzed data on more than 69,269 U.S. women, ages 42 to 67, in the Nurses' Health Study I, tracked from 1988 to 2008, and 107,915 women, ages 25 to 42, in the Nurses' Health Study II, tracked from 1989 to 2007. About 60% of the nurses performed more than one year of rotating night shift work at baseline; about 11% in Nurses' Health Study I had more than 10 years of rotating night shift work at baseline, and about 4% in Nurses' Health Study II worked more than 10 years of rotating night shifts at baseline, and this proportion increased during the follow-up.

The researchers found that the longer women worked rotating night shifts, the greater their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Those women who worked rotating night shifts for three to nine years faced a 20% increased risk; women who worked nights for 10 to 19 years had a 40% rise in risk; and women who worked night shifts for over 20 years were 58% more at risk. In addition, women who worked rotating night shifts gained more weight and were more likely to become obese during the follow-up.

After taking into account body weight in the analyses, the increased risk of type 2 diabetes for women who worked rotating night shifts was reduced but remained statistically significant. For example, women who worked rotating night shifts for more than 20 years had 24% increased risk. These findings indicate that the relationship between night shift work and type 2 diabetes is partly explained by increased weight.

While the findings need to be confirmed in men and in some ethnic groups (96% of the participants were white Caucasians) and further studies are needed to identify underlying mechanisms for the association, the results are of potential public health significance due to the large number of workers who work rotating night shifts.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 15 million Americans work full time on evening shifts, night shifts, rotating shifts, or other irregular schedules. Shift work has been shown to disrupt sleeping patterns and other body rhythms, and has been associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome, conditions associated with type 2 diabetes.

"This study raises the awareness of increased obesity and diabetes risk among night shift workers and underscores the importance of improving diet and lifestyle for primary prevention of type 2 diabetes in this high risk group," said Hu. Studies also are needed to evaluate type 2 diabetes risk in other shift work schedules, such as evening shifts or permanent night shifts.

Support for this study was provided by the National Institutes of Health and career development awards from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
