Twitter CEO says new policy is for transparency: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Twitter Chief Executive Dick Costolo said the company's recently announced online content policy was meant to be a transparent way to handle government requests for the removal of certain content and did not mean it is actively monitoring Tweets, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Twitter had said last week it would begin restricting Tweets in specific countries, renewing questions about how the social media platform will handle issues of free speech as it rapidly expands its global user base.

"There's been no change in our stance ... in respect to content on Twitter," Costolo said at the "Dive Into Media" conference hosted by the website All Things D, which is owned by News Corp, the Journal reported.

Costolo said Twitter would only block Tweets locally at a government's request and would leave the Tweet up for the rest of the world. In place of the pulled Tweet would be a message that the content was removed at the request of the local government, the Journal said.

Costolo said the policy is not meant as a means for the company to get into countries where it currently does not operate, such as China or Iran.

"I don't think the current environment in China is one in which we can operate," he added.

No-one at Twitter could immediately be reached for comment.

Attorney: Texas redistricting talks have stalled

(AP) ? Negotiations between minority groups and Texas officials in a lengthy clash over new political districts appeared stalled Monday as both sides prepared to argue in Washington over whether the Republican-drawn maps violate the federal Voting Rights Act.

An attorney for the League of United Latin American Citizens, one of nine groups suing to block the maps, said negotiations to create temporary maps so Texas could salvage an April 3 primary date hit an impasse over the weekend. Both sides have another week to work out a deal, but Luis Vera, LULAC's general counsel, said he was not optimistic.

"It just doesn't seem feasible," he said.

A federal court in San Antonio last week gave the sides until Feb. 6 to draw up the temporary maps that would remain in place through November's election. If they don't, Texas' primaries will be pushed back for a second time. They were originally scheduled for March.

Lauren Bean, a spokeswoman for the Texas attorney general's office, said her office was not commenting on the negotiations.

Vera said a major obstacle is that the state isn't involving all parties in the negotiations. Gary Bledsoe, president of the Texas NAACP that is among the nine plaintiffs, said the state was mainly negotiating with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund and the Mexican American Legislative Caucus.

Bledsoe said unanimous agreement among the nine isn't required for the court to accept a deal. He believes that while there is a "reasonable chance" the state could work out a deal with two or three of the groups, odds are longer of getting total consensus.

Vera has been among the most vocal proponents of simply waiting for a Washington federal court to rule on the separate issue of whether the original maps violate the Voting Rights Act.

States typically redraw their political boundaries every 10 years based on population figures from the census. Texas is one of nine, mostly Southern states that require "preclearance" from the U.S. Justice Department when changes to electoral maps are made.

At issue is how the Texas maps treat minorities. Republican leaders say the maps merely benefit their party's candidates, but minority groups claim they discriminate by diluting minority voting power. One major issue has been whether the maps fairly account for the surge in Hispanic population in Texas over the last decade.

Closing arguments in the Washington trial are set for Tuesday. Many of the principal negotiators involved in the interim map talks traveled to Washington on Monday to prepare for that case.

The three-judge panel in Washington has given no indication on when it might rule.

The San Antonio court had previously drawn interim maps while the Washington trial took place. The U.S. Supreme Court threw them out earlier this month, saying the San Antonio court did not show enough deference to the map crafted by Texas lawmakers and adjusted parts of the map where there was no Voting Rights Act argument.

Before the San Antonio court last week gave both sides an additional 10 days to hash out a compromise or forfeit an April 3 primary date, Texas Republican Party chairman Steve Munisteri said conservative minorities would be disenfranchised if the primary is delayed again.

The later Texas' primaries are held, the less influence the state is likely to have on who emerges as the Republican presidential nominee.

"If we're talking about minority rights, what about Hispanic Republicans?" Munisteri told the court during Friday's hearing.

If the April 3 date is postponed, Democrat and Republican party leaders say an April 17 primary would be possible if temporary maps are in place by mid-Februrary.

Cisco Linksys Wireless-N Range/Extender Bridge (RE1000)

Cisco Linksys? Wireless-N Range/Extender Bridge (RE1000) is one of the best wireless extenders we?ve tested to date. Still, like many extenders we?ve tested, it?s going to be pretty useless for distances exceeding 150 feet from a wireless router. However, unlike other products tested, it still gave a signal and connection (although not a speedy one) at 150 feet?as long as you're transmitting in the 2.4 GHz band.

Design and Specs

The RE1000 is a small, rectangular box with a two-prong electrical plug. The device has a WPS and a reset button on its top panel and a Fast Ethernet 10/100 network port on the bottom to serve as a wireless bridge for a wired device. There?s also a removable panel on the underside that lifts off to reveal a C7 AC power port. The RE1000 only supports the 2.4 GHz band, which is a shame, given the numbers of 5 GHz and dual-band routers out there. ??

Installation:

The RE1000 extender ships with a setup CD. Enclosed instructions direct users to set up the device close to the computer being used for install to the router to ensure a strong signal and that the extender can be moved after setup.

When the install kicks off, Cisco's software immediately discovered a newer version of setup was available, which means you?ll want to set this device up from a computer that is online, preferably connected to the wireless network you are trying to extend.

Next, the instructions have you plug the extender into an outlet. The setup software ?searches? for the extender. In about a minute, the software discovered the extender and discovered the names of all the wireless networks in proximity. I selected the network I wanted to place the extender, entered the passphrase when prompted and that?s all it took to get the extender setup.

Without question, the RE1000 has the easiest setup of any wireless extender I?ve tested: efficient and drop-dead simple.

Configuration and Features

The RE1000 has a browser-based utility that can be used to configure the device. The interface follows the same design as Cisco Linksys' E-series routers. ?Within the interface, users can get a view at the status of the extender and information such as channel width, signal strength and quality, as well as?packet information.

The extender also supports some Quality of Service (QoS) functionality with WMM (Wireless Multimedia) for improving the quality of video, voice, and other types of network traffic. ?Other features include diagnostics and enabling log files.

Performance:

Using Ixia?s IXChariot testing suite, I measured the RE1000?s throughput at distances of 50, 75, 100 and 150 feet away from the router as well as right next to the server room the router is located in. Besides measuring throughput, I also?noted how many signal bars the operating systemthe wireless client used for testing is reporting, whether it?s possible to connect to the wireless LAN at greater distance, and if it?s possible to browse the Internet at greater distances.

While the RE1000 did not give us the best throughput numbers (that distinction goes to the BearExtender PC Long Range 802.11n USB WiFi Booster [LINK=]) the RE1000 allowed connecting the wireless network and surfing the web from 150 feet away from the router?although surfing was slow. That's an ability I didn't observe with the BearExtender device. Here are benchmark results:

Why the RE1000 is Editor?s Choice for Extenders:

Wireless extenders are notorious for frustrating setup and not actually offering much in extending a wireless signal. While BearExtender?s device had better throughput testing with Ixia, by 150 feet, it was no longer possible to even connect to the WLAN, much less surf the Internet. I had the same issue with the D-Link Amplifi DAP-1525 Wi-Fi Booster.

The RE1000 was able to extend the signal to 150 feet, although, as mentioned, the connection was painfully slow. This could be due to the heavy interference in our testing area, so those without such RF noise may get better results.

In addition, the RE1000 incorporates solid features and the amazingly uncomplicated setup of Cisco Linksys? latest routers. These factors weighed all together, make the Cisco Linksys Wireless-N Range Extender/Bridge (RE1000) a four-star Editors' Choice pick. We can hardly wait for the version that supports the 5 GHz band as well.

Jury finds Afghan family guilty in honor killings

(AP) ? A jury on Sunday found an Afghan father, his wife and their son guilty of killing three teenage sisters and a co-wife in what the judge described as "cold-blooded, shameful murders" resulting from a "twisted concept of honor."

The jury took 15 hours to find Mohammad Shafia, 58; his wife Tooba Yahya, 42; and their son Hamed, 21, each guilty of four counts of first-degree murder in a case that shocked and riveted Canadians from coast to coast. First-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.

After the verdict was read, the three defendants again declared their innocence in the killings of sisters Zainab, 19, Sahar 17, and Geeti, 13, as well as Rona Amir Mohammad, 52, Shafia's childless first wife in a polygamous marriage.

Their bodies were found June 30, 2009, in a car submerged in a canal in Kingston, Ontario, where the family had stopped for the night on their way home to Montreal from Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Prosecutors said the defendants allegedly killed the three teenage sisters because they dishonored the family by defying its disciplinarian rules on dress, dating, socializing and going online. Shafia's first wife was living with him and his second wife. The polygamous relationship, if revealed, could have resulted in their deportation.

The prosecution alleged it was a case of premeditated murder, staged to look like an accident after it was carried out. Prosecutors said the defendants drowned their victims elsewhere on the site, placed their bodies in the car and pushed it into the canal.

Defense lawyers said the deaths were accidental. They said the Nissan car accidentally plunged into the canal after the eldest daughter, Zainab, took it for a joy ride with her sisters and her father's first wife. Hamed said he watched the accident, although he didn't call police from the scene.

After the jury returned the verdicts, Mohammad Shafia, speaking through a translator, said, "We are not criminal, we are not murderer, we didn't commit the murder and this is unjust."

His weeping wife, Tooba, also declared the verdict unjust, saying, "I am not a murderer, and I am a mother, a mother."

Their son, Hamed, speaking in English said, "I did not drown my sisters anywhere."

But Judge Robert Maranger was unmoved, saying the evidence clearly supported their conviction for "the planned and deliberate murder of four members of your family."

"It is difficult to conceive of a more despicable, more heinous crime ... the apparent reason behind these cold-blooded, shameful murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your completely twisted concept of honor ... that has absolutely no place in any civilized society."

The family had left Afghanistan in 1992 and lived in Pakistan, Australia and Dubai before settling in Canada in 2007. Shafia, a wealthy businessman, married Yahya because his first wife could not have children.

The prosecution painted a picture of a household controlled by a domineering Shafia, with Hamed keeping his sisters in line and doling out discipline when his father was away on frequent business trips to Dubai.

The months leading up to the deaths were not happy ones in the Shafia household, according to evidence presented at trial. Zainab, the oldest daughter, was forbidden to attend school for a year because she had a young Pakistani-Canadian boyfriend, and she fled to a shelter, terrified of her father, the court was told.

The prosecution said her parents found condoms in Sahar's room as well as photos of her wearing short skirts and hugging her Christian boyfriend, a relationship she had kept secret. Geeti was becoming almost impossible to control: skipping school, failing classes, being sent home for wearing revealing clothes and stealing, while declaring to authority figures that she wanted to be placed in foster care, according to the prosecution.

Shafia's first wife wrote in a diary that her husband beat her and "made life a torture," while his second wife called her a servant.

The prosecution presented wire taps and cell phone records from the Shafia family in court to support their honor killing theory. The wiretaps, which capture Shafia spewing vitriol about his dead daughters, calling them treacherous and whores and invoking the devil to defecate on their graves, were a focal point of the trial.

"There can be no betrayal, no treachery, no violation more than this," Shafia said on one recording. "Even if they hoist me up onto the gallows ... nothing is more dear to me than my honor."

Defense lawyers argued that at no point in the intercepts do the accused say they drowned the victims.

29 Chinese missing after militant attack in Sudan

(AP) ? Militants apparently captured 29 Chinese workers after attacking a remote worksite in a volatile region of Sudan, and Sudanese forces were increasing security for Chinese projects and personnel there, China said Sunday.

China has close political and economic relations with Sudan, especially in the energy sector.

The Foreign Ministry in Beijing said the militants attacked Saturday and Sudanese forces launched a rescue mission Sunday in coordination with the Chinese embassy in Khartoum.

The Ministry's head of consular affairs met with the Sudanese ambassador in Beijing and "urged him to actively conduct rescue missions under the prerequisite of ensuring the safety of the Chinese personnel," the statement said.

In Khartoum, a Chinese embassy spokesman said the northern branch of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement announced that 29 Chinese workers had been captured in the attack. The spokesman, who asked not be identified, gave no other details and it wasn't clear if the militants had demanded conditions for their return.

Other details weren't given. The official Xinhua News Agency cited the state governor as saying the Sudan People's Liberation Movement attacked a road-building site in South Kordofan and seized the workers.

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement are a guerrilla force that has fought against Sudan's regime. Its members hail from a minority ethnic group now in control of much of South Sudan, which became the world's newest country only six months ago in a breakaway from Sudan.

Sudan has accused South Sudan of arming pro-South Sudan groups in South Kordofan. The government of South Sudan has called such accusations a smoke screen intended to justify a future invasion of the South.

China has sent large numbers of workers to potentially unstable regions such as Sudan and last year was forced to send ships and planes to help with the emergency evacuation of 30,000 of its citizens from the fighting in Libya.

China has consistently used its clout in diplomatic forums such as the United Nations to defend Sudan and its longtime leader Omar al-Bashir. In recent years, it has also sought to build good relations with leaders from the south, where most of Sudan's oil is located.

Chinese companies have also invested heavily in Sudanese oil production, along with companies India and elsewhere.

One Direction To Appear On 'iCarly'

MTV News exclusive: The British boy band will play themselves on an episode of Miranda Cosgrove's hit Nick show.

"iCarly" is about to feel the effects of a British Invasion. The show has just booked British boy band One Direction to appear on the fifth season of the Miranda Cosgrove-starring show.

The guys will be on set Monday to tape their appearance on the episode, during which they will play themselves and perform "What Makes You Beautiful."

According to a synopsis of the episode, "Carly returns home sick after a trip and discovers that One Direction has accepted an invitation to perform on their web show. Not long after arriving, bandmate Harry becomes sick and we see Carly doting over him. Realizing Harry is playing sick for the attention, they hatch a plan to get him back in the group by telling him Gibby has become their newest bandmember. Meanwhile, Spencer becomes a personal trainer and gives a bratty girl a makeover."

The guys of One Direction, who got their start after appearing on "The X Factor" in 2010, are already superstars in their native U.K., and now it seems they are poised to break Stateside. Their debut album, Up All Night, is set for U.S. release on March 20, and they will be touring with Big Time Rush starting next month.

Cosgrove stopped by the MTV News offices recently and teased that there were some big plans in store for season five. "We're just getting started to start the next season, so I'm not really sure what's going to come, because it's sort of a surprise for all of us even," she said. "But I've heard Carly's getting a boyfriend, so that's exciting, and we're gonna have some more musical guests, some big, different musical artists," she said, noting that she'd love to get Katy Perry on the show. "There are a lot of different musical acts that I love, so it's fun whenever we get to have music in an episode."

Michelle Obama made an "iCarly" appearance earlier this month on a special episode that honored military families.

New Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX released on Verizon (Appolicious)

Battery life has been an issue for smartphones from the very beginning. Motorola hopes to stand out from the crowded smartphone market with its newest Droid Razr Maxx, combining an extended battery life with a sleek design for a truly new-age phone. LG?s also debuting a CES treat on Verizon, marking a 4G first for the Android manufacturer, while Inspiration Works delivers an Android tablet just for kids. Here are this week?s top Android devices.

Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX

Just launched on Verizon for about $300, Motorola?s Droid RAZR Maxx has increased battery life over the original RAZR while still maintaining the same sexy and slim figure. Apparently, you?ll get 21 hours of talk time on a single charge, and seven hours of streaming video, even when you take into consideration Verizon?s battery-hogging 4G LTE network. It?s the RAZR MAXX?s 3,300 mAh lithium ion battery that powers extended life, nearly twice the capacity of the original RAZR. There?s also some software perks, such as ?Smart Actions,? to automatically monitor GPS, Wi-Fi and other battery-draining settings to keep your phone powered up. Thanks to the massive battery, the RAZR MAXX weighs 0.32 pounds and measures 0.28 inches thick (slightly bigger than the original RAZR). Shipping with Android 2.3.5, expect the RAZR MAXX to be appearing in stores now, with the ability to upgrade to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the future.

LG Spectrum

LG is upping the ante on 4G with its latest Spectrum, available now through Verizon Wireless. The Spectrum debuted at CES a couple weeks ago, boasting an HD screen at 4.5 inches, with a Qualcomm 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. Running Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, the LG Spectrum will later be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. There?s also an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus and LED flash, as well as 1080p video capture. The front-facing camera is 1.3 megapixels, and the Spectrum also comes with SmartMovie HD, an app for creating and editing HD videos on the fly. Expect to pay about $200 for the Spectrum with a new two-year contract.

Inspiration Works Kurio

If you?re tired of your two year-old banging away at your tablet, get them one of their own. Unveiled at the Toy Fair 2012, Inspiration Works has wrapped an Android 4.0-powered tablet in sturdy plastic with a kid-friendly user interface. Dubbed the Kurio, this tablet is for entertainment and education, complete with parental controls to limit web access and control app downloads and purchases. You can add up to eight profiles on the Kurio, each customizable. You can time-lock the tablet as well, keeping kids from downloading apps after bedtime. As far as specs go, the Kurio has three models: a 7-inch version with a capacitive 800x480 display, an 8-inch model with a squarer 800x600 screen and a 9.7-inch version closer to an iPad in size, with a 1024x600 panel. All three models come with USB ports, mini HDMI and 4GB of built-in storage, expandable to 32GB with a microSD card. The larger models have 2-megapixel front- and 0.3-megapixel rear-facing cameras (the smallest Kurio comes only with a rear-facing camera). Look for this toddler-ready Android tablet to hit stores in July, with an initial release in the UK and no details yet on a U.S. release.

Oil price climbs above $100 a barrel (AP)

NEW YORK ? The price of oil is higher after new reports on jobs and manufacturing show a steadily improving U.S. economy that will need more oil and gas.

Benchmark oil on Thursday rose $1.10 to $100.50 per barrel in New York. Brent crude rose $1.13 to $110.94 in London.

The Commerce Department said orders for long-lasting, durable goods rose in December, and a private survey showed a range of economic indicators got stronger at the end of 2011.

The jobs market appears to be improving, even after a modest increase in unemployment claims last week.

Also on Thursday the Energy Department said that natural gas supplies dropped more than expected last week, though they're still well above the five-year average.

Meanwhile, retail gasoline stayed at a national average of $3.38 per gallon.

Teen mistakenly deported to Colombia to return

By msnbc.com staff and news services

A runaway 15-year-old Texas girl who was deported to South America after claiming to be an illegal immigrant could soon return home.

Government officials in Colombia said the U.S. Embassy on Thursday submitted the necessary documents for Jakadrien Lorece Turner to return to the U.S.

WFAA-TV via AP

Jakadrien Lorece Turner, a Texas teen was deported to Colombia after providing a false identity.

The Colombian government said the girl had been working in a local call center before her grandmother tracked her down using Facebook and alerted U.S. and Colombian officials.

?

The Dallas Morning News reported that the teen, who didn't speak Spanish, was pregnant.

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement official said the teen gave authorities a fake name when she was arrested in Houston last year for theft. The name was of a Colombian woman born in 1990, and Turner maintained the name through deportation proceedings.

It's unclear if she'll be charged upon her return for falsifying her identity.

Jakadrien's grandmother, Dallas hairstylist Lorene Turner, told the Associated Press that U.S. officials should have done more to identify the girl after she gave a fake name and claimed to be an adult.

"She looks like a kid, she acts like a kid. How could they think she wasn't a kid?" she asked.

Jakadrien's family says she left home in November 2010. Her details were posted - and still remain - on the website of the National Center for Missing or Exploited Children.

Houston police said the girl was arrested on April 2, 2011, for misdemeanor theft in that city and claimed to be Tika Lanay Cortez, a Colombian woman born in 1990.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement official said the teen claimed to be Cortez throughout the criminal proceedings in Houston and the ensuing deportation process in which an immigration judge ultimately ordered her back to Colombia.

Colombian citizenship
The ICE official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to not being authorized to discuss additional details of the case, said the teenager was interviewed by a representative from the Colombian consulate and that country's government issued her a travel document to enter Colombia.

The ICE official said standard procedure before any deportation is to coordinate with the other country in order to establish that the person is from there.

The girl was given Colombian citizenship upon arriving there, the ICE official said.

The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Jakadrien was issued travel documents at the request of the U.S. National Security Agency and with information submitted by U.S. officials. Colombian officials are investigating what kind of verification was conducted by its Houston consulate to issue the temporary passport.

Dallas Police detective C'mon (pronounced Simone) Wingo, the detective in charge of the case, explained that in August she was contacted by the girl's grandmother, who said Jakadrien had posted "kind of disturbing" messages on a Facebook account where she goes by yet another name, TiKa SoloToolonq.?

Relatives were then put into contact with the U.S. Embassy in Bogota to provide pictures and documents to prove Jakadrien's identity.

Lorene Turner said she has spent a lot of time tracking down Jakadrien, whose family nickname is Kay-Kay.

"In between customers I'd get on the computer looking for Kay-Kay, I was obsessed."

She and the teen's mother, Johnisa Turner, say they did not contact Jakadrien through Facebook and plead for her to come home because they were afraid.

Nice home
"I didn't want to scare her or get her in trouble with those who had her," Lorene Turner said, adding that she feared the girl might have been caught up in human trafficking. "I don't know. I'm just going crazy. She didn't have any reason to leave. She lived in a nice home (with her mother and stepfather). We were very close. I don't know why she left."

Johnisa Turner was reluctant to go into any details about the deportation, saying she didn't know anything. She referred calls to her attorney, Ray Jackson, but he could not be immediately reached.

"I was devastated," she said. "When your child doesn't come home from school, of course you go to the worst end of the spectrum. I was just hoping that she was alive and well."

Johnisa Turner said her daughter, a freshman at a new Dallas high school, was experimenting with different hairstyles and clothes but "wasn't a problem kid." She said the teen was a good student but when her grades began to slip, her parents took away some of her privileges, including closing down her Facebook account and limiting the time she could listen to music.

Johnisa Turner said she was relieved that Jakadrien has been found and wants her back in Dallas.

"Whatever it is, the past is in the past. I want her home so we can move from this day forward."

According to the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the girl was enrolled in the country's "Welcome Home" program after she arrived there. She was given shelter, psychological assistance and a job at a call center, a statement from the agency said.

Google Maps Driving Directions

Google Maps provides excellent directions with a lot of hidden features. Not only can you get driving directions, you can get walking, public transport, and biking directions, too. This tutorial assumes you're using the desktop version of Google Maps. You can get directions from your mobile phone, but the interface is slightly different. The concepts are the same, so this tutorial may still be useful.

To get started, go to maps.google.com and click on Get Directions on the upper right hand corner.

You may also notice a link labeled Set your default location. This is an optional step to set the place you're most likely to need driving directions from. In most cases that's your house or your business. If you click on the link and set your default location, that saves you a step the next time you get driving directions. That's because Google will automatically add your default location to your starting location.

Arab League says Syria monitors are helping (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? The head of the Arab League has said its peace monitors are helping to ease a violent crackdown on anti-government protests in Syria, but urged President Bashar al-Assad's government to carry out a peace plan in full.

Meanwhile army defectors whose armed insurgency has threatened to overshadow the peaceful popular uprising captured dozens of members of the security forces by seizing two checkpoints Monday, the opposition said.

Army defectors also clashed with security forces at a third checkpoint, killing and wounding an unspecified number of troops loyal to Assad, opposition activists said.

Assad is struggling to defeat a popular uprising and avoid becoming the latest leader to be toppled by "Arab Spring" revolutions, after those of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen.

After nearly 10 months of violence in which the United Nations says more than 5,000 people have been killed, mostly unarmed civilians, an Arab League monitoring mission has spent the past week assessing Assad's compliance with a peace plan.

Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby said Monday that Syria's military had now withdrawn from residential areas and was on the outskirts of the cities, but gunfire continued and snipers were still a threat.

"The latest telephone report said there is gunfire from different places, which makes it hard to say who is shooting who," Elaraby said in Cairo. "Gunfire should be stopped and there are snipers."

"We call upon the Syrian government to fully commit to what it promised."

PEACE PLAN

The League's plan calls for Assad to pull troops and tanks from the streets, free detainees and talk to his opponents.

Elaraby said the monitors had secured the release of 3,484 prisoners and succeeded in getting food supplies into Homs, one of the centers of the violence. "Give the monitoring mission the chance to prove its presence on the ground," he said.

But many Syrian opposition activists are skeptical that the mission can put real pressure on Assad to halt the violence.

Sunday, the Arab Parliament, an 88-member committee of delegates from each of the League's member states, called for the monitors to leave Syria, saying their mission was providing cover for unabated violence and abuses by the government.

Two people were killed by gunfire in Homs Monday, and the bodies of another two were handed over to their families, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Security forces killed a farmer in Douma, on the northeastern edge of Damascus, as they carried out raids searching for suspects wanted by authorities, it said.

TAKING RISKS

Kinan Shami, a member of the Syrian Revolution Coordinating Union activists' group, said from Damascus that people were taking huge risks by gathering in cities where Arab League monitors were expected, in the hope of talking to them.

"People expected them in Daraya yesterday on New Year's Day and thousands went to the main square, raised the Independence Flag on a mast and gathered around it. Security forces shot at them and killed two protesters," Shami said.

"The people are trying to show the monitors the repression and are risking their lives to meet them because everywhere they go the monitors are surrounded by security... Other than getting arrested and beaten or killed, they could easily face endless counts of treason and communicating with foreign powers."

But Issam Ishak, a senior member of the main opposition Syrian National Council, said the monitors must be given a chance. "Their presence is helping further erode the fear factor and is encouraging the expansion of the protests."

The reported attacks on military checkpoints came three days after the anti-government Free Syrian Army said it had ordered its fighters to stop offensive operations while it tried to arrange a meeting with the Arab League delegates.

Rami Abdelrahman, director of the Observatory, said Monday's operation had taken place in the northern province of Idlib. It was not immediately clear how many people had been killed or captured by the rebels.

The government bars most foreign journalists from operating in Syria, making it difficult to verify witness accounts. Assad blames the unrest on foreign-backed armed Islamists who officials say have killed 2,000 security personnel.

The state news agency SANA said a worker at a school in the city of Hama had been killed by armed men who captured her three days ago after her husband, who worked at the same school, refused their demands that he leave his job.

SANA also said a journalist working for state radio had died Monday from wounds sustained when gunmen shot him several days ago in Daraya, in Damascus province.

GOP candidates barnstorm across Iowa in final campaign push

Republican presidential candidate Texas Rep. Ron Paul makes remarks during a campaign stop on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

DES MOINES, Iowa ? The White House their goal, Republican presidential hopefuls raced across Iowa on Monday in a final, full day of frenzied appeals for support in precinct caucuses that open the 2012 campaign. "It is the race you make it," an upset-minded Rick Santorum told voters soon to pick a winner.

In the race's final hours, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney predicted victory and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich all but forecast his own defeat.

From Sioux City in the western part of the state to Davenport in the east, the six presidential hopefuls hustled through 23 fast-paced campaign events combined. That and the $13 million or more already spent on television commercials was evidence enough of the outsized importance Iowa holds in the race to pick a Republican opponent for President Barack Obama next fall.

Romney had one eye on his GOP rivals and another on Obama as he argued he is in the best position of all to capture the White House. The president has been "a great divider, the great complainer, the great excuse giver, the great blamer," said the former Massachusetts governor, who is making his second try for the nomination and has been at or near the top of the Iowa polls since the campaign began.

Later, before a noisy crowd in Marion, he predicted his own victory in a state that humbled him four years ago. "We're going to win this thing with all of our passion and strength," he said.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul flew into the state accompanied by his son, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, and urged supporters to "send a message tomorrow night that echoes not just around Iowa but ... around the world." Many in the audience of about 300 chanted "end the Fed," a reference to the Texan's pledge to abolish the nation's central bank as a first step toward repairing the economy.

Most polls in recent days have put Romney and Paul atop the field in Iowa, with Santorum in third and gaining ground. More than a third of all potential caucus-goers say they could yet change their minds.

"Do not settle for less than what America needs to transform this country. Moderate candidates who try to appeal to moderates end up losing," Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, said in a slap at Romney.

Republican presidential candidate former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, left, accompanied by his wife, Callista, gestures during a campaign stop, Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, in Walford, Iowa.

After absorbing a pounding in television commercials from Romney's deep-pocketed allies, Gingrich said he was looking ahead to next week's primary in New Hampshire, and then to one in South Carolina on Jan. 21

"I don't think I'm going to win, I think when you look at the numbers that volume of negativity has done its damage," he said of the Iowa caucuses.

Romney is viewed as the overwhelming favorite in New Hampshire, although Santorum, Paul and Gingrich have all said they intend to campaign there.

South Carolina figures to be more wide-open, the first contest in the South, and in a deeply Republican state.

If others were thinking about conceding Iowa, they did not show it.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry took swipes at Romney, Santorum and Paul in an appearance in Sioux City. "If you have my back tomorrow at the caucuses, I'll have your back for the next four years in Washington, D.C," he said.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann unveiled the first television ad in months. It hailed her as Iowa-born and the only "consistent conservative fighter" in the race and concluded, "She'll never back down."

The commercial was the last in a race in which the candidates' own ads were sometimes overshadowed by the more negative ones run by super PACs, organizations established and funded by their allies.

Perry and a super PAC supporting him spent the most, $5.5 million, according to one tally of the ad spending.

But it was the combination of Romney ($1.3 million) and his super PAC ($2.7 million) that appeared to have the most noticeable impact on the race. That was particularly so in the final few weeks, when Gingrich surged to the front of the polls.

The former speaker soon found himself under relentless attack in ads by the Romney super PAC. At the same time, the former Massachusetts governor's campaign took the high road, airing positive ads designed to show him in a favorable light.

Short on funds, Gingrich was unable to respond in kind, declaring instead he would run only a positive campaign.

It wasn't much of a contest, and before long, he faded, while Paul and then Santorum rose.

In fact, Gingrich's emergence was only one in a series of twists that seemed to produce a new front-runner every few weeks.

Republican presidential candidate former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum speaks at a campaign stop at Pizza Ranch in Boone, Iowa, Monday, Jan. 2, 2012.

Bachmann earned that distinction when she won a straw poll last summer in Ames, but she was bumped off stride when Perry entered the race. His boomlet lasted until his first few debate performances were judged lacking, and then it became Herman Cain's turn. The former business executive suspended his campaign after being accused of personal indiscretions, and Gingrich began gaining ground, then Paul.

Throughout it all, Romney remained steady, advantaged by his well-funded campaign, the super PAC that supports him and the missteps of his rivals.

Yet to the end, the polls suggested the former Massachusetts governor was having trouble persuading Iowa Republicans that he was conservative enough to warrant their support.

Somehow, even an intense post-Christmas push by the candidates through Iowa's cities, small towns and smaller towns left Iowa Republicans uncertain about which contender to back.

"I'm really still undecided," said Bill Brauer, of Polk City, as he listened to Santorum speak on the campaign's final day.

"I'm going to make up my mind tonight," he said.

ssociated Press writers Brian Bakst, Thomas Beaumont, Philip Elliott, Mike Glover, Kasie Hunt and Shannon McCaffrey in Iowa contributed to this report. Espo reported from?Washington.

How to Unlock the Bootloader on the Galaxy Nexus

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich looks good on the Galaxy Nexus, but it would be better if you have the power to customize the phone the way you want it. Customizing your phone is possible if the bootloader is unlocked. If you want to unlock your phone?s bootloader, then you?re in great luck?we have a step-by-step guide on how to unlock the Galaxy Nexus? bootloader.

With an unlocked phone, you will be able to root your phone, install custom recovery images, and install custom ROMs. Read on and follow our step-by-step guide for unlocking the Galaxy Nexus? bootloader.

Important Reminders

Take note of some reminders before you proceed with unlocking your phone?s bootloader.

  • Make sure you?re using Windows 7 or Windows XP for the instructions in this tutorial.
  • You will need the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) executable file. If you have installed the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) to your machine, you will already have the ADB executable. For instructions on installing the Android SDK (as well as ADB), follow the guide here.
  • Create a backup for all your phone data and files, or transfer all files on your SD card in case it gets erased or corrupted during unlocking the phone?s bootloader. Do not use PC suites in creating a backup for your files. The format used by such software may not be compatible with the Galaxy Nexus.
  • Disable all system protection tools on your computer such as antivirus software, Samsung KIES, and firewall programs. These may interfere during the unlocking process.
  • Unlocking the phone?s bootloader may void your phone?s warranty.
  • Check your phone?s current firmware version before unlocking the bootloader. Take note of your phone?s current firmware version and write it down. This might help you find a solution when an unlikely situation occurs.
  • We will not be held liable for any damage arising from the use of this tutorial. Unlock your Galaxy Nexus? bootloader at your own risk.

Unlocking the Bootloader

If you?re not having second thoughts, you may now proceed to our step-by-step guide to unlocking the Galaxy Nexus? bootloader.

  1. Install the Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE drivers to your computer. Get the drivers here.
  2. Enable USB debugging by going to Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging.
  3. Assuming that you have installed ADB, place fastboot.exe in the /tools folder inside the Android SDK installation folder. If fastboot.exe is nowhere to be found, download the file here and place it in the same folder as adb.exe.
  4. Connect your phone to the computer via USB cable.
  5. Open a command prompt directly in the directory where both adb.exe and fastboot.exe are located (which can either be /tools or /platform-tools inside the Android SDK installation folder).? To open a command prompt, press and hold the Shift key, then right-click on the folder.? Select ?Open Command Prompt Here? from the context menu.? A command prompt window will open.
  6. In the command prompt window, type in the command ?adb reboot bootloder? (without the quotes) and press the Enter key. Your phone will be rebooted into bootloader mode.
  7. Afterwards, type in the command ?fastboot oem unlock? (without the quotes) and press the Enter key.
  8. The phone will display some policy notice and will ask you to confirm whether or not you want to unlock the phone?s bootloader.
  9. Using the phone?s volume keys to navigate, select Yes and press the Power button to confirm. You have successfully unlocked the phone?s bootloader.

Take note that it may take more time to reboot once you have unlocked the bootloader. In case your phone gets stuck in a boot loop or faces force close errors, you have to initiate recovery mode and clear the cache. You will also need to repeat the process from the start when the process is interrupted in the middle of unlocking the bootloader.

Were you able to successfully unlock the bootloader on your Galaxy Nexus? What are you planning to do next after unlocking?

Nasa satellite enters Moon orbit

Measuring the Moon's gravity

  • The Grail satellites measure the distance to each other as they circle the Moon, pole to pole
  • Flying over gravity variations will induce tiny acceleration changes in the spacecraft twins
  • Making the measurements requires the satellites to carry very precise timing devices
  • The survey will probably continue until the end of 2012 if the pair survive an eclipse in June

Nasa has succeeded in putting the first of two gravity mapping satellites in orbit around the Moon.

The Grail-A spacecraft fired its main engine late on Saturday (GMT) to slow itself sufficiently to take up an elliptical path around the lunar body.

Its twin, Grail-B, will attempt exactly the same manoeuvre on Sunday.

Together, the satellites will make measurements that are expected to give scientists remarkable new insights into the internal structure of the Moon.

This new data should clarify ideas about the Moon's formation and resolve many questions, such as why its near and far sides look so different.

Lead scientist Dr Maria Zuber is hoping for some dramatic discoveries.

"My resolution for the new year is to unlock lunar mysteries and understand how the Moon, Earth and other rocky planets evolved," the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researcher said.

"Now, with Grail-A successfully placed in orbit around the Moon, we are one step closer to achieving that goal."

The duo were launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, last September, and took a long spiral out to their destination.

This weekend's approach to the Moon was designed to bring them in over the south pole.

Grail-A, which is running ahead of its twin, initiated its orbit insertion manoeuvre at 2121 GMT with a 40-minute burn on its 22-newton thruster.

Grail-B is programmed to make an almost identical burn on Sunday, starting at 2205 GMT. Nasa should have confirmation shortly before 2300 GMT on New Year's Day that both satellites are in the positions they should be.

"Following the lunar orbit insertion, the spacecraft will perform a series on intricate burns that take about two months, and these are required to get both spacecraft down to a [55km; 34-mile] altitude; and once that's done, that's when the science for Grail can begin," explained David Lehman, the mission's project manager at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California.

Grail will map the small variations in gravity across the Moon.

These differences are the result of an uneven distribution of mass. Obvious examples at the Moon's surface include big mountain ranges or deep impact basins, but even inside the lunar body the rock will be arranged in an irregular fashion, with some regions being denser than others.

All this will have a subtle influence on the pull of gravity sensed by over-flying spacecraft.

The Grail twins will make their measurements by carrying out a carefully calibrated pursuit of each other.

Near and far-side of the Moon

  • It takes the Moon about the same amount of time to rotate on its axis as it does to complete an orbit of the Earth
  • This is known as "synchronous rotation" and explains why the Moon always presents its familiar nearside to Earth (top left)
  • The nearside is covered in smooth, dark lunar maria (Latin for "seas") created by magma flooding into crater depressions
  • The far-side is more rugged, with a thicker crust pock-marked by impact craters; the highest elevations are on the far-side (top right; bottom)
  • In 1959, the USSR's unmanned spacecraft Luna 3 became the first to image the far-side; many of its features have old Soviet names

As the lead spacecraft flies through the uneven gravity field, it will experience small accelerations or decelerations. The second spacecraft, following some 100-200km behind, will detect these disturbances as very slight changes in the separation between the pair - deviations that are not much more than the width of a human red blood cell.

When the gravity map is combined with comparable-resolution topographical information showing the surface highs and lows, scientists should be able to deduce the Moon's probable internal structure and composition. This is fundamental knowledge that will play into theories of how the lunar body formed and how it has evolved over time.

"We believe the Moon formed from the impact of a Mars-sized object into Earth, but we understand little really of how this happened and how the [lunar body] cooled off after the violent event," said Dr Zuber. And she described as "shocking", the continued inability of science to explain why the rugged far-side of the Moon looks so different from that of the nearside with its great swathe of dark volcanic plains, or maria.

"Given that we've sent so many missions that have studied the outside of the Moon, it seems that the answer is not on the surface. The answer is locked in the interior," she said.

Grail's mapping phase will last for 82 days until early June. The Moon then goes into shadow, into eclipse, behind the Earth.

If the satellites can survive the hours of darkness on their batteries, it is likely they will be tasked with a second mapping cycle in the second half of 2012.

This would be at a much reduced altitude, perhaps as low as 25km from the surface. Getting lower would improve the resolution of the gravity maps yet again, and enable scientists to study even the structure of relatively small, shallow craters.

Grail is an acronym for Gravity Recovery and Internal Laboratory. The satellites will be given more engaging names than just "A" and "B" once the weekend's orbit insertion is confirmed. The names are being chosen via a public competition.

Inconstant Constants

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Some things never change. physicists call them the constants of nature. Such quantities as the velocity of light, c , Newton’s constant of gravitation, G , and the mass of the electron, m e , are assumed to be the same at all places and times in the universe. They form the scaffolding around which the theories of physics are erected, and they define the fabric of our universe. Physics has progressed by making ever more accurate measurements of their values.
